6/4/2019 - Devouring History - Foods & Fads Lecture

More than anything else human history has been one long struggle for daily bread. Plants are essential to our lives, yet we know little about how they have affected history. The desire for sugar, tea, coffee, cotton, and spices has arguably had more influence on how the world is organized than any other aspect of human existence. These lectures will consider how seemingly insignificant plants have fostered religious taboos, international trade, warfare, imperialism, slavery, racism, migration, our health and lifestyles as well as culinary and fad obsessions. After all, “we are what we eat….” The fee for the 2-day, 6-hour lecture is $40. Seating is limited. Tuesdays, June 4 & 11.
