7/28/2018 - August Wednesday at the Movies at Southbury Library

Every Wednesday in August except the first, the Southbury Public Library will be screening movies at 1:00PM in the Kingsley Room of the Southbury Public Library. These films are open to the public, free to attend, and require no registration.

It’s Christmas in August on the 8th, when Southbury Public Library will be showing a film about Charles Dickens and how he came to create A Christmas Carol and its unforgettable characters. Dan Stevens plays Dickens, who mixes his vivid imagination with real-life inspirations that include his father (played by Jonathan Pryce) to conjure up Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim, and others.

The famed mystery writer Agatha Christie is responsible for the twisted tale in the film showing on August 15th. It concerns a spy turned private detective who is lured by his former lover to catch her grandfather’s murderer before Scotland Yard exposes dark family secrets. Glenn Close and Max Irons are in the cast.

Africa is the setting for the August 22nd film. Lupita Nyong’o stars in this true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda who is introduced to the game of chess. Her world rapidly changes as, supported by her family and community, she finds the confidence and determination to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.

A family tragedy sparks the drama of the August 29th film. In the wake of a husband and father’s death, the wife and two sons he leaves behind find themselves adrift. As each tries to find meaning in a world without the man who held them together, they follow very different paths. Andie Mac Dowell and Chris O’Dowd star.

Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list titles of the films. Offered free to the public, they are sponsored by Friends of the Southbury Public Library. They begin at 1:00 PM in the Kingsley meeting room surround sound theater, with infrared listening system available and closed captioning.
