Southbury Celebration 2019 is an annual Food, Music, Fellowship and Fireworks extravaganza that will be held on Saturday September 21st from 4:30 -8:30 pm at Lake Stibbs on Route 172 at the Southbury Training School. The 21st Annual Celebration is co-sponsored by the Town of Southbury and the Southbury Training School and is free and open to the local community.
“Southbury Celebration is a family-oriented community event that supports and highlights the good and positive aspects of our local community,” explained founder and co-chair Brian M. Jones. “The evening is about our true sense of community - meeting new people, re-connecting with old friends, and enjoying food, music, fellowship and a great firework show!”
The Food Court will open at 4:30 pm and will serve until 8:30 pm. This year Southbury Celebration has over 13 food vendors including 8 commercial food trucks plus numerous community groups with a large variety of anticipated food options including: all beef hot dogs, pulled pork, smoked BBQ brisket, pulled chicken, red hots, chili dogs, sweet potato fries, onion rings, curly fries, slushies, dumplings, fried rice, steak teriyaki grinder, portobello mushroom grinder, hot lobster rolls, fried scallop rolls, fried shrimp, New England clam chowder, fish & chips, chicken tenders, fried dough, baked goods, 10-12 kinds of cannoli’s, popcorn, cotton candy, donuts, ice cream, soda, water, coffee and beverages.
“We have excellent commercial food trucks and local charity food vendors serving a diverse selection of food options,” explained co-chair Carole Van Tassel. “We also encourage people to arrive by 4:30 or 5pm to avoid long food lines.”
“The community feedback was that most people wanted to have more food trucks and food options, so our committee worked very hard to expand the Food Court,” explained co-chair Brian M. Jones. The community is encouraged to arrive early to avoid food lines and the last-minute traffic, plus to bring their friends and family and lawn chairs and blankets.
Musical performances will be provided by talented high school and college musicians. Pomperaug High School Choral Director Linda Hughes has assisted the committee in selecting a diverse range of high school musicians. Also, the Pomperaug High School Honorary Music Society, Tri-M officers will be providing music and stage support during the event. The music will begin at 4:30pm with a PowerStation DJ. The audience is welcome to get up and dance or sit, relax and listen to the music.
The National Anthem will be performed at approximately 7:45 pm immediately before the fireworks. Atlas PyroVision Entertainment Group (www.atlaspyro.com) will then launch fireworks over beautiful Lake Stibbs. Atlas PyroVision is the largest professional fireworks display company in New England, that produces over 700 shows annually. Sound, stage and lighting expertise are provided by PowerStation Events (www.powerstationevents.com) based in Cheshire, CT.
S.M.A.R.T. Inc will share an informational tent with the Town of Southbury and will be providing free informational print materials. S.M.A.R.T., Inc. is a local non-profit organization 501(c)(3) dedicated to strengthening individuals, families, and communities. S.M.A.R.T., Inc. has three areas of focus: Local Prevention Council (LPC), Parent University, and Family, School and Community Events.
A free shuttle bus will depart from Heritage Village paddock at 5:30 pm and from Grace Meadows Senior Housing at 5:45 pm. Reservations are required for the shuttle. Heritage Village resident’s sign-up at HV Activities and Grace Meadow residents at their community center. The bus will return immediately after the fireworks at approximately 8:15 pm.
No alcohol and no pets are permitted at the event. Caution should be exercised with service animals due to the large crowds and fireworks noises. Extensive free parking is on the STS Great Front Lawn. Due to congested event traffic and safety concerns, there will be no pedestrian walking, no vehicle parking and no parent “drop off/pick up” along Route 172. Handicap and Special Needs parking is available at the Lake Stibbs parking lot.

“The Southbury Celebration Committee encourages everyone to come early to enjoy the food, music, fellowship and fireworks and to be an active part of this 21st anniversary, multi-generational community event,” co-chair Brian Jones said. The annual event draws over 5,000 people.
