4/11/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for May 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for May 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a mix of in-person and virtual events this month. Children’s Programs:

Big Dance StoryWalk – Monday, April 18-Friday, June 3 on the library grounds
Get out and enjoy the spring weather with our new StoryWalk featuring the picture book Big Dance by Aoife Greenham. Follow along as you read the story, then stop inside for a craft.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, May 2, 9 & 16 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Heather for stories and songs every Monday. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Imagine Nation Nature Study: Herb Planting – Tuesday, May 3 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join the educators from the Imagine Nation Museum Early Learning Center for a Nature Study all about herbs. Preschool & up. Registration required.

Babies & Books Storytime – Tuesday, May 3 & 10 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Babies and Books is an interactive lapsit program for babies ages 6-24 months and their parents and caregivers. Space is limited. Registration required.

Food Explorers Online: Lemon Blueberry Cupcakes – Wednesday, May 4 at 5:30 pm on Zoom
Join the Registered Dietitians of Food Explorers to make a sweet spring treat. We're making Lemon Blueberry Cupcakes Ages 7 & up and families. Registration is required.

Toddler Time Storytime – Wednesday, May 4 & 11 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Parents and caregivers are invited to join their toddlers ages 2 and 3 for theme based stories, songs, and a craft. Space is limited. Registration required.

Babies & Books Storytime – Thursday, May 5 & 12 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Children ages 4 and 5 able to and pay attention independently are invited to listen to longer stories and complete a craft or activity. Space is limited. Registration required.

Mother’s Day Flower Arranging – Saturday, May 7 at 11:30 am in the Kingsley Room
Join the Southbury Garden Club for a lesson in flower arranging. Participants will make beautiful floral arrangements in a vase. Ages 7-14. Space is limited. Registration required.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, May 7, 14, 21 & 28
Stop by the Youth Services department every Saturday to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last

ARTuesday – Tuesday, May 10 & 24 at 5 pm in the Storytime room
Stop by on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, May 12 at 11:00 am in the Kingsley Room
Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

Pom Pom Hamster Craft – Thursday, May 19 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join Miss Heather and Miss Katie to make a yarn pom pom hamster craft. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

Teen DIY In Person: Book Page Roses – Monday, May 2 from 4-5pm in the Kingsley Room
Join us to make beautiful paper roses out of old book pages. Celebrate spring with a bouquet of these never-wilting flowers that are surprisingly easy to make. Space is limited. Grades 6-12. Registration required.

Minute to Win It – Tuesday, May 10 from 6-7pm in the Kingsley Room
Fast paced and fun, you’ve got one minute to succeed in these quick challenges! With snacks involved in some challenges and all of them being hilarious to watch, everyone wins. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required

Teen To-Go Craft Kits: Koala Cord Keeper – Starting Monday, May 16
Pick up complete kits to make a Koala Cord Keeper from the Teen Department while supplies last. Each kit will have instructions and all supplies needed (except scissors). Kits are not limited per person, but we ask that you only take what you (and siblings or friends you are crafting with) need. Grades 6-12.

Third Thursday Game Night: Life Size Clue– Thursday, May 19, Two Sessions 4-5pm OR 6-7pm in the Kingsley Room.
Join us in person to play Clue in a group setting! Find out whodunnit in this larger-than-life mystery. In order to accommodate everyone, there will be two sessions: one from 4-5pm and one from 6-7pm. Please only register for one session. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Book Themed Mad-Libs – Wednesday, May 25 from 4-5pm in the Brown Room.
Join us to play Mad Libs themed around book series like Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, Selection series, The Chronicles of Narnia and more! These _______ (adjective) word games will make you laugh until you _______ (verb. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Advisory Board – Tuesday, May 31 from 6-7 pm in the Youth Services Tutor Corner
We are looking for creative, energetic volunteers in grades 6-12 who are interested in making a difference at the Southbury Public Library! Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members can directly influence our teen book and AV collections, teen programming and events, and other teen services. Each monthly meeting opens with a discussion about ideas for programs, materials, and more and closes out with some special volunteer projects. If you are interested in serving on the Teen Advisory Board, you can apply to be considered on our website at www.southburylibrary.org/tab.
