10/2/2019 - Southbury Senior Center to hold Open House

The Southbury Senior Center will be hosting an Open House on Tuesday October 15th from 10:00 am -2:00 p.m. The Open House will feature a welcome coffee, tours, a make and take Halloween centerpiece craft, Café Lunch, and an Eagle program presented by Horizon Wings. Advance registration is required to participate in the craft and the lunch.

According to Senior Services Director Tamath K. Rossi and Senior Center Coordinator Kathy Anderson, the Open House will be an opportunity for the public to meet the Senior Services Team, learn about programming, the services provided and to get to meet active participants. Guests will also have a chance to tour the facility and ask questions about programming.

The Open House is an opportunity to share the activities we offer and the services we provide,” said Anderson and Rossi. “We have a vibrant and very active center with a great group of regular participants that we look forward to showcasing on October 15th.”

The center offers a variety of recreational, educational, social, health and wellness, creative and just for fun programs and classes including the AMP. This spring the Southbury Senior Center and the CT Healthy Living Collective will continue the Aging Mastery Program®, a nationally recognized program to help older adults master aging. The innovative ten-week health and wellness program developed by the National Council on Aging, has been successful at helping older adults build their own playbook for aging well. This effort is made possible in part through support from the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation.

The center offers also a variety of physical activities in which senior citizens can participate. Tap dancing, line dancing, square dancing and various levels of exercise programs are available to seniors of all interests and skill levels.

The senior center serves as a community resource as well as an activity center. Resources and support include:

  • Year round monthly Medicare and Medicaid counseling
  • Weekly counseling during the annual Medicare Open Enrollment period
  • A robust volunteer program
  • Discounted monthly haircuts
  • Tailor/seamstress services
  • Free monthly AAA Safe Driver course
  • Free tax prep service by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program through the IRS and Connecticut Association of Human Services
  • On site Municipal Agent, providing resources and support for all issues facing seniors and their families
  • On site Municipal Veteran Representative providing resources and support for all issues concerning Southbury Veterans

The Southbury Senior Services team is also encouraging health care professionals and friends or family members of senior citizens in the area to attend the open house. According to Rossi, education and awareness of the services provided will allow for members of the community to refer seniors to the center.

“We want to focus on the activities and services that our department provides and this open house gives us the opportunity for community members to come see what we we’re doing,” Rossi said. “We hope that people will spread the word about the variety of programming we offer so we can continue to draw our seniors in. My hope is that any community member in the area who wants to be active and engaged at the center will come to meet our team and the people who are here on a regular basis,” said Rossi. “Coming to a new building and a new place can be intimidating, but meeting someone there first can make it a more comfortable experience and this open house will afford us that opportunity.”

For more information on the services provided by the Southbury Senior Center, call during business hours and stop by for a tour. Team members are available between 8 a.m. and 4:30p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Friday to answer questions and discuss the events calendar.

“We hope that the open house will bring new seniors into the programs and bring people together that may have lived in the Southbury area all their lives and never met each other,” Rossi said. “We have a fantastic base group of members who come in every week, but we would like to extend our welcome and the opportunity to join us to everyone.”

Registration is required. Please call the center at 203-262-0651 to sign up for the Open House programs offered.
