350 Years of Southbury

350th Celebration News

8/9/2023 - Mattatuck Fife and Drum Band and Outdoor Movie Night on August 15, 2023

The Town of Southbury is holding a special, outdoor family-friendly event on Tuesday, August 15th on the Town Hall Green at 501 Main Street South, as part of the Town’s year-long 350th Anniversary Celebration. Beginning at 6:30pm, there will be a March and performance by the Mattatuck Fife and Drum Band. Get up close and personal with the musicians to learn about the many traditions that have been carried on since their organization began in 1767. Participants will be invited to join in on the fun and play a beat or two on one of many time-period drums.

After the sun sets, the outdoor movie feature is Strange World. This Walt Disney Animation Studios’ movie takes audiences on an exciting journey with a legendary family of explorers. “I look forward to the audience drawing parallels,” says Michael Ganem, Director of Southbury Parks and Recreation, “to the early settlers of Southbury.”

Between performances, there will be Southbury-trivia for a chance to win movie passes, compliments of Riverview Cinemas, or make memories last with the 350th photo booth. Bring chairs and blankets and enjoy the concessions. Bottled water, snow cones, and of course freshly popped popcorn, will all be available for sale.

This outdoor event, arranged by Southbury Parks and Recreation, is a family-friendly, free event, with the support of Southbury Village Square and Riverview Cinemas, Chatfield’s True Value Hardware and the 350th Anniversary Steering Committee.
