6/21/2026 - Discovering the Rochambeau Route, From Breakneck to Newtown, 1781-1782

What roads did the French Army take to get through Southbury during the Revolutionary War? It’s a question frequently asked by local residents. It’s a question not easily answered though. Only by a systematic analysis of period journals, maps, surveys, correspondence, and a dive into the local land records can one come up with a satisfactory answer.

And was Rochambeau the only commander who led troops over our streets?

Join John Dwyer, Southbury's Town Historian, to find out if the French Expeditionary Force passed through your neighborhood and about other Revolutionary celebrities who rode through our town.
