5/29/2019 - Piano Sonatas in the Age of Mozart

The piano sonata emerged in the classical period as one of the most important new musical genres of the era. To this day it remains an iconic form that endures thanks in large part to the contributions of composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. In the sonatas of the former, listeners encounter sunny, major keys, tuneful melodies and steady accompaniment from the left hand. In the works of Beethoven, the sonata evolves into a more complex piece, often unpredictable with respect to tempo and rhythm. In forging this expressive style, Beethoven laid the foundation for what historians would call the "romantic" period. Professor Harel will take listener's on a musical journey by performing portions of the sonatas on the piano.
