6/8/2019 - South Britain Open House + Walking Tour

The Old Town Hall in Southbury, CT will be participating in the 15th Annual Connecticut Open House Day – a unified celebration of the state’s fascinating world of art, history, and tourism. During this one-day event, the Southbury Old Town Hall, along with more than 200 other organizations and attractions throughout the state, will open its doors to visitors.

The Old Town Hall Museum houses many exhibits and artifacts for viewing and use in research. Additionally, you can learn more about nationally known artist, Wallace Nutting, and author, Glady Taber. There are also locally found arrowheads from native American Indians who lived in this area, a very large piece (400 lbs.) of petrified wood, and an exhibit on “Home of the Brave: When Southbury Said No to the Nazis”. There will also be a walking tour of South Britain, the village surrounding the Old Town Hall Museum. “Economic Innovation Before Electricity” led by Town Historian, John Dwyer, and architect, Hugh J. Sullivan, Bennett Sullivan Associates Architects & Planners. Settled early in the 18th century as a part of Southbury, South Britain was recognized as a separate parish in 1766. The settlement soon became a center for water-powered industries made possible by the damming of the Pomperaug River. Learn how tremendous innovation and community spirit helped create over 30 businesses in this small village. Registration is required for the Early Innovation – South Britain Walking Tour and is open to only 25 attendees.
