5/7/2023 - History Walk

Join us and take a walk through time, learning as you go, with this fun, historical community event. Organized by the Southbury Land Trust and Southbury 350th Anniversary Steering Committee, this free, outdoor event is open to everyone. It will be held 12pm – 3pm, starting in Settlers Park at 280 Crook Horn Road. No registration is required.

Visitors may park in Settlers Park in designated areas, and then gather near the gazebo. Beginning at noon there will be food trucks, historical exhibits, games and acoustic music. The History Walk begins at 1:00pm, and will include a militia encampment and demonstration in Settlers Park; a fife ‘n drum led walk to Crook Horn and Mansion House and historical Kingsland, with stops at key landmarks along the way. The Walk will end back at the gazebo where the festivities will continue until 3:00pm.

Details:

  • 12:00pm - Event starts near the gazebo, featuring food trucks Kraftwich and Sonny’s Asian Grinders; live acoustic music by Michael Carrington; 350th Anniversary commemorative items, plus historical artifacts and games provided by the Southbury Historical Society.
  • 1:00pm - Sons of the American Revolution will demonstrate a military encampment and muster with reenactors’ on the ball field, serving to highlight Southbury’s historical connection to the Revolutionary War.
  • History Walk continues, led by members of the Mattatuck Fife ‘n Drum Band, with stops along the way for historical commentary.
  • The Walk exits Settlers Park, walking on Crook Horn Road to Mansion House Road (sections will be closed to through traffic).
  • The Walk returns to the park, with additional presentation spots.
  • The final presentation spot is the marker for the white oak tree.
  • 2:30pm - Tour ends back at the gazebo; more food, music, and games.
  • 3:00pm – Event concludes

The Town of Southbury is holding events and activities all year long to celebrate 350 years of community, culture and history (1673-2023), aimed at highlighting the past and progress of the one and only Southbury.

The 350th Anniversary Steering Committee consists of John Dwyer and Kevin Bielmeier (co-chairs), Brian Jones (vice-chair), Justin Bette, Lynn Dwyer, Melinda Elliott, Michael Ganem, Kara Kenney, Mary Korsu, and Gosia Liedlich.
