This park has approximately 100 acres of scenic woodland surrounding approximately 25 acres of what is referred to as Transylvania Pond. The property was sold to the Town of Southbury by Janie Gray Pierce in March of 1971. Janie Gray Pierce was born on November 3, 1889. She attended school in Woodbury and became a teacher until her retirement. She lived in a large Victorian style home at the corner of Transylvania Road and Route 67 with her parents where she shared her generosity in her later years with neighboring children and adults. “Miss Janie” passed away in 1974.

Shortt's Field was sold to the Town of Southbury by John Shortt in 1999. This 44-acre parcel is accessed via Janie Pierce Park’s blue trail on the east side of the pond. The green trail starts on the blue trail and ends at the blue trail. Dogs are allowed in this park but must be leashed. The current green trail was reconstructed in 2021 by the Conservation Commission. There are benches on knolls within the field and along the trail for hikers to relax and enjoy the views. Please stay on the trail while in the field, we are trying to protect plants and wildlife.
