The Town of Southbury is seeking a full-time Utility Laborer to join the Highway Department. This position is part of the Teamsters Local 443 Collective Bargaining Unit and requires a 40-hour workweek, with opportunities for overtime.

Starting salary: $30.99/hour.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operates trucks for snow plowing and spreading de-icing materials.
- Clears roads of litter, glass, and leaves; shovels and loads debris; cuts weeds and grass; cleans grounds.
- Loads and transports materials such as gravel, soil, lumber, and other supplies.
- Assists in preparing asphalt, concrete, and other street repair materials.
- Performs heavy manual labor in the construction and repair of roads, streets, culverts, and bridges.
- Repairs road shoulders, guardrails, and fences.
- Digs and backfills ditches; cleans catch basins and sewers; lays pipe.
- Uses shovels, rakes, and various small hand tools.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, including in adverse weather conditions.
- Physical strength, stamina, coordination, and overall fitness necessary for demanding outdoor work.
- Ability to work overtime during winter storms and to work weekends and holidays for special events as needed.
Required Equipment Operations:
- Operates bucket trucks, woodchippers, chain saws, pruning saws, backpack blowers, and various other hand and motorized tools.
Required Physical Effort:
- Must be able to lift and move heavy equipment in compliance with State and Federal safety guidelines.
- Must have the physical ability, stamina, and coordination necessary to safely operate heavy equipment, including during adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform strenuous tasks such as shoveling, hauling, and loading materials.
- Must maintain physical readiness to ensure personal safety and the safety of others while performing job duties.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2-3 months of experience operating dump trucks and bucket trucks and performing related manual labor.
- Valid Connecticut CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement.
