The Town of Southbury is seeking a motivated, self-starting Public Works Floater to support multiple divisions within the Public Works Department, including the Transfer Station, Outside Properties, and Highway. This position reports to the Public Works Director and performs a wide variety of operational and maintenance tasks.
This position is part of the Teamsters Local 443 collective bargaining unit and offers excellent benefits including no cost health insurance, 457(b) retirement plan with employer match, life and long-term disability insurance and generous paid sick, vacation and personal leave.

Salary: $27.96/hour
Hours: 40/week
Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday
Responsibilities:
- Assist with daily Transfer Station operations: direct trailers, collect fees for demolition materials, appliances, tires, etc.
- Operate and maintain Transfer Station equipment such as the garbage compactor, trailer truck, loader, and hopper; measure bulky waste; assist the public with proper disposal procedures.
- Perform outside maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, edging, mulching, weeding, planting, and general landscape upkeep.
- Make minor repairs to picnic tables, swings, playground equipment, and park facilities; paint buildings and equipment as needed.
- Plow parking lots and driveways using pickup or dump trucks; clear sidewalks with snow blowers or hand shovels.
- Operate a variety of power and hand tools (weed eater, blower, edger, chainsaw, lawn vacuum, lawn tractor, mower, snow blower, etc.).
- Inspect and maintain Streetscape features, repairing light poles/fixtures, flags, and banners, and identifying deficiencies such as damaged sidewalks or crosswalks.
- Move and set up office furniture, equipment, tables, chairs, tents, and bleachers for programs, concerts, and events.
- Clean and prepare picnic pavilions and barbeque grills; restock and maintain restrooms.
- Perform minor building maintenance and custodial duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to operate required equipment, including (but not limited to): backpack blower, chainsaw, chemical weed control tools, hand-held compactor, rodding machine, small air/electric tools, walk-behind snow equipment, lawn mowers, utility saws, and leaf vacuum equipment.
- Ability to operate Transfer Station equipment such as hopper, trailer truck, loader, garbage compactor, and transfer machine.
- Ability to drive trucks requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Strong working knowledge of motorized equipment and hand/power tools used in public works operations.
- Ability to work overtime for winter storms or unscheduled work, and availability for scheduled weekend/holiday assignments related to pavilion rentals and special events.
- Working knowledge of landfill operations, rules, and regulations.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with the public.
Physical Requirements:
- Excellent physical ability, stamina, and coordination; must be able to stand for long periods and perform manual labor such as shoveling, hauling, and loading.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, odors, loud noise, and extreme temperatures is expected.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work, including pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying items up to 80 lbs. Physical labor comprises more than 70% of this position.
- Ability to stand, walk long distances, bend, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; may occasionally require work from a ladder.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus one year of related experience.
- Must be DEEP certified (or able to obtain certification within 3 months of hire) as a Connecticut Transfer Station Operator.
- Must possess a Class B CDL or obtain one within 9 months of hire.
