Southbury Parks & Recreation is seeking an Adventure Day Camp Director for the upcoming summer season. The Adventure Day Camp Director is responsible for the overall leadership and daily operation of Adventure Day Camp, serving children in grades 1-5. This role oversees staff supervision, program planning, camper safety, and parent communication while ensuring a high-quality, fun, and safe camp experience. The Director works closely with the Recreation Supervisor and Parks & Recreation Director to implement camp programming, field trips, and policies, and serves as the primary on-site leader throughout the summer season.
Pay Rate: $25 per hour
Hours: 35-40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday

Primary Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Directly supervise Assistant Camp Director, Head Camp Counselors, Camp Counselors, Counselors-in-Training (CITs) and campers
- Provide daily oversight of staff performance and camper engagement
- Conduct staff orientation, weekly check-ins, mid-season and end-of-season evaluations
- Ensure staff scheduling, breaks, shift changes, and time management compliance (including 40-hour limits)
- Assume Camp Assistant Director duties when needed
Program Planning & Operations
- Develop and implement themed weekly camp curriculum, activities, entertainers, and field trips
- Create and adapt daily and weekly schedules based on camp needs (including weather changes)
- Coordinate field trips and entertainers with the Recreation Supervisor
- Direct daily activity schedules, including pool time, lunch, transportation, and cleanup routines
- Maintain attendance, activity records, and end-of-session reports
Camper Safety & Risk Management
- Maintain and enforce all safety standards, policies, and procedures
- Review camper health forms and communicate medical needs and allergies to staff
- Ensure proper collection of waivers and enforce all field trip safety guidelines
- Familiarize with field trip locations, activities, restrooms, emergency exits, and lunch areas
- Handle Department of Children and Families (DCF) reporting when necessary, following proper protocol
Communication & Customer Service
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians during camp hours
- Monitor and respond to camp cell phone communications
- Provide timely updates to parents regarding schedule changes, field trips, or delays
- Coordinate daily park usage with the TeenScape Camp Director
- Collaborate with Aquatics Supervisor and outside vendors as needed
Administration & Site Management
- Inspect camp facilities daily for safety, cleanliness, and maintenance needs
- Communicate supply needs, repairs, and inventory requests to the Recreation Supervisor
- Review inventory reports and recommend materials for purchase
- Assist with payroll reminders, punch-ins, and report submissions
- Operate sign-in/sign-out and pre-screening stations as required
Additional Duties
- Ensure quality customer service to all campers, families, and the public
- Make program recommendations to the Director of Parks & Recreation and Recreation Supervisor
- Perform other duties as assigned
Reporting Structure
Reports To: Recreation Supervisor, Director of Parks & Recreation
Consults With: Camper parents/guardians, outside vendors, TeenScape Camp Director, Aquatics Supervisor
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills
- Ability to plan, organize, and lead recreational activities for children
- General knowledge of a wide range of recreation programs
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff, parents, and the public
Required Qualifications
- Preferred 2-3 years of experience as a summer camp counselor at the respective site
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (Adult & Pediatric)
- EpiPen and Medication Administration certification
