3/12/2026 - Employment Opportunity: Adventure Day Camp Head Camp Counselor

Southbury Parks & Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible Head Camp Counselor to join our Adventure Day Camp team for the upcoming summer season. This leadership role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children in grades 1–5 and is passionate about creating a safe, fun, and engaging camp environment. The Head Camp Counselor supports the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director while helping lead daily activities, supervise campers and staff, and ensure smooth operations during before and after camp hours.

Pay Rate: $19 per hour
Hours: 35-40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday

Responsibilities & Skills

  • Supervise campers and staff during before and after camp hours (approximately 7:00–8:30 AM and 3:30–6:00 PM).
  • Serve as the daily on-site supervisor during before and after camp, including facilitating camper drop-off and pick-up and unlocking/locking the facility at the start and end of the day.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate activities, games, and crafts during before/after camp and regular camp hours; assist with setup and cleanup of activity stations.
  • Assume the duties of the Assistant Camp Director and/or Camp Director when one or both are unavailable.
  • Collect and manage lost and found items, present items to campers during pick-up, and communicate with parents regarding unclaimed items at the end of each week.
  • Maintain cleanliness of restrooms, pavilions, camp facilities, equipment, supplies, and high touch surfaces; report cleaning and supply needs to Southbury Parks & Recreation Administration in a timely manner.
  • Attend field trips to provide additional support for camper groups requiring redirection; may supervise small groups as needed.
  • Communicate professionally with parents and manage drop-off and pick-up procedures during before and after camp.
  • Monitor and respond to parent communications via the camp cell phone during before and after camp hours.
  • Coordinate camper transitions between Adventure Day Camp and TeenScape Camp, maintaining clear communication with the TeenScape Camp Director.
  • Provide daily supervision, guidance, and discipline of campers during recreational activities.
  • Support and lead a variety of recreational activities, including arts and crafts, sports, dance, and drama, as directed by the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.
  • Collaborate with the other Head Camp Counselor to address inventory needs and camper or program concerns.
  • Assist with staff training, meetings, and orientations as needed.
  • Maintain strong communication and positive working relationships with staff, campers, and parents.
  • Ensure camper safety and well-being by following all camp standards, risk management practices, and town/department policies.
  • Assist with pre-screening, sign-in, and sign-out procedures when required.
  • Cover scheduled staff breaks as assigned.
  • Administer First Aid/CPR/AED, medications, and EpiPen as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Preferred 1–2 years of experience as a summer camp counselor at the respective site
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including telephone, copier, computer, and standard office software
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (Adult & Pediatric), Medication Administration, and EpiPen certification required (or ability to obtain prior to the start of camp)
