3/18/2026 - Employment Opportunity: Part-time Social Services Coordinator

The Town of Southbury is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented part-time Social Services Coordinator to support residents in need by evaluating eligibility for local, state, and federal assistance programs. This position plays a key role in connecting individuals and families with essential services, resources, and community programs while maintaining accurate records and reports.

The Social Services Coordinator works closely with the Social Services Director, town departments, community partners, and assistance agencies to ensure residents receive timely, respectful, and effective support.

Pay Range: $23.00-$25.00 per hour

Hours: 15-20 per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Interview clients and evaluate eligibility for social service assistance programs
  • Assess client needs and recommend appropriate programs and interventions
  • Assist clients with preparing and submitting applications for available assistance programs
  • Interpret program requirements and services for applicants, recipients, and the community
  • Administer private assistance programs and provide referrals to resources including the food bank, fuel bank, backpack program, holiday programs and the Southbury Helping Hands nonprofit.
  • Assist with the Southbury Helping Hands Holiday Program and Back-to-School Backpack Program
  • Advise clients on locating affordable housing and/or emergency shelter when appropriate
  • Refer suspected cases of neglect or abuse to appropriate agencies in accordance with regulations
  • Respond to citizen inquiries, requests, and complaints professionally and courteously
  • Assist with data collection for reporting, including statistical, annual, and utilization reports for various social service programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of or experience with federal and Connecticut laws and regulations related to public assistance
  • Strong interviewing, assessment, and referral skills
  • Ability to analyze social service needs and develop effective solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, town departments, outside agencies, and the public
  • Ability to work with compassion, sensitivity, and confidentiality

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and an associate’s degree in a human service-related field and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
