11/3/2026 - Transfer Station Radioactive Materials Notice

Recently medical waste was improperly disposed at the Southbury Transfer Station causing two loads of municipal solid waste (MSW) to test positive for radioactive materials.

When radioactive waste is mixed with MSW, it causes issues at the disposal facility. The entire trailer load is rejected by the facility and the town must pay to locate, isolate, store, and properly dispose of the material.

As a reminder, per section 8-17 of the Town’s Code of Ordinances, radioactive and otherwise hazardous wastes are classified as “Unacceptable Waste” and are prohibited from disposal at the Transfer Station.

Residents with potentially radioactive materials should contact the supplier for proper disposal procedures.

Thank you for your cooperation.
