First Selectman’s
Update
Southbury Celebration
The
Southbury Celebration set to be held on October 2nd has
unfortunately been cancelled for this year.
The decision was made to protect the health and safety of the community
due to concerns with the rise of COVID-19 cases and the spread of the Delta
variant. The Committee will be looking
forward to the 2022 Southbury Celebration.
Although this cancellation is disappointing and we were excited to bring
the community together for this event, I hope residents will understand and
join us for next year’s celebration.
Hurricane Ida
As
Connecticut experienced the heavy rain, strong winds and flooding last week
from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, our Emergency Management, Public Works,
Police and Fire departments along with Emergency Medical Services worked
tirelessly to respond to the storm and help those affected by the tropical
depression. I want to thank all involved
for their hard work and dedication in protecting the safety of Southbury
citizens and managing this emergency.
This storm
brought an unexpected and tragic event to our area as state trooper, Sgt. Brian
Mohl, died after being swept away by the floodwaters in Woodbury this past Thursday
morning while in the line of duty. My
heart goes out to his family and friends as they cope with this tragic
loss. It is not often that we experience
losses like these in our community. I
think we have all been affected by Sgt. Mohl’s death, and I hope we will all
remember his bravery and many years of dedicated service to our community.
ARPA Task Force Meeting
The first
American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Task Force meeting will be held tonight at
6:00pm at Town Hall. The Board of
Selectmen formed this task force to make recommendations on the best ways to
spend the $5.79 million dollars the Town has been awarded by the federal government. This meeting will be focused on introductions
and discussion of input we have received from the community regarding the
appropriation of funds. www.southbury-ct.org/arpa
Lake Zoar Channel Closure
Structural
steel is going to be installed over the Lake Zoar channel under the Rochambeau
Bridge in the next two weeks. This
installation will cause disruption to marine traffic as the channel will be
closed from 9/7 – 9/10 and 9/13 – 9/17.
This erection of structural steel is necessary to protect the safety of
boaters. www.lakezoarauthority.org
