MARGINAL RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND SOME BRIEFLY HEAVY RAINFALL TONIGHT…NO WATCHES ISSUED AT THIS TIME…
At 1:15 PM radar showed a line of showers and a few thunderstorms moving slowly across central New York state. This line is moving slowly to the east at approximately 20 MPH and is not expected to reach western Connecticut until midnight. The line is forecast to move across Connecticut from west to east between midnight and 5:00 AM. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is forecasting that any thunderstorms that move across the state tonight with the line will have a 5 – 15% chance of containing strong winds and around a 2% chance of containing an isolated tornado. The showers and thunderstorms in the line may bring a quick ½ - 1” of rain to many towns. A few towns may see up to 2” of rainfall. This rainfall may cause some minor to briefly moderate urban flooding overnight. No major urban flooding is expected. The rainfall may also cause some smaller streams to rise into minor flooding. The rainfall is expected to end by daybreak. The overall impact of this event is expected to be minor. However, given the recent heavy rainfall, soils remain wet, and DESPP / DEMHS will monitor conditions overnight.
