8/8/2022 - Assessor: Farm, Forest and Open Space Exemptions

The Assessor's Office reminds residents that application may be made for special land classification for preservation of farm, forest or open space at the Assessor’s Office.

An owner may apply for classification as farm, forest and open space land from September 1st thru October 31, 2022.

If the owner’s livelihood is derived from a farming operation, he is entitled to a tax exemption of up to $100,000 worth of machinery plus all livestock and poultry. You must apply in the Assessor’s Office for this exemption.

An owner requesting that this land be designated as forest land must hire a private forester who has been certified by the state. A list of approved foresters is available at portal.ct.gov/DEEP/Forestry. The private forester will issue a report stating that the land conforms to the established standards. The report must be dated by September 30 to be eligible for the October 1 grand list.
