What is an accessory dwelling unit (ADU)?
- An accessory dwelling unit is a secondary residence that shares the building lot of a larger, primary home. The unit cannot be bought or sold separately, but they are often used to provide additional income through rent or to house a family member.
- In Southbury the ADU can be a maximum of 800 sq. ft. and no more than two bedrooms for an interior or attached ADU to the primary residence.
- The ADU can be 1200 sq. ft. and no more than two bedrooms if the ADU is detached from the primary residence. (i.e. over a detached garage)
