12/7/2022 - A Message from the Planning Commission and Affordable Housing Subcommittee

Southbury Residents

Are you looking for a way to have a parent move in with you while still having independence?
Do you want to give your adult children a chance to save some money on housing while getting started in life?
How about making some extra income?

Consider an Accessory Dwelling Unit!

What is an accessory dwelling unit (ADU)?

  1. An accessory dwelling unit is a secondary residence that shares the building lot of a larger, primary home. The unit cannot be bought or sold separately, but they are often used to provide additional income through rent or to house a family member.
  2. In Southbury the ADU can be a maximum of 800 sq. ft. and no more than two bedrooms for an interior or attached ADU to the primary residence.
  3. The ADU can be 1200 sq. ft. and no more than two bedrooms if the ADU is detached from the primary residence. (i.e. over a detached garage)
