Beginning
Monday, June 26 and continuing for two weeks, the Department of Public Works and
Distinctive Tree Care will be carrying out tree and brush removal at detention
basins throughout the town.
Detention
basins are an integral part of the storm water management system in Southbury.
During storms, water flows into detention basins at a high flow rate and is
gradually released at a low flow rate. This minimizes the risk of flooding and keeps
pipes freer of debris. Without detention basins, high flow rates in storms can
overwhelm pipes. Trees and brush growing in detention basins reduce their storm
water capacity and impede regular maintenance, which increases the risk of
flooding. This tree and brush work will help reduce the risk of future flooding
by ensuring the integrity of the detention basins.
