6/20/2023 - Employment Opportunity: Transfer Station Laborer

The Town of Southbury is hiring a full-time Transfer Station Laborer in the Public Works Department. The position is represented by the Teamsters Local 443 Collective Bargaining Unit. Required hours are 40/week with the potential for overtime. Provides excellent medical benefits through the Teamsters union. Eligible to participate in the defined contribution retirement plan with Town match and receives life and disability insurance and generous sick, vacation and personal leave. Salary is $25.96/hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with various landfill duties, including monitoring and assisting in deposit of solid waste, recycling, C&D, and bulky waste.
  • Directs residents to proper disposal locations and observes to ensure proper deposit procedures, measures volume and collects payment for incoming C&D and bulky waste.
  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment and machinery including compactor, trailer truck, loader, hopper, and gates.
  • Prepares waste trailers and containers for pickup and coordinates pickup service.
  • Piles and crushes various waste types, moves various waste types, maintains cleanliness, order, and safety in all areas.
  • Enforces landfill rules and regulations, including ensuring all vehicles have permits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school with a diploma or GED
  • Three or more years of related experience
  • DEEP certified as a CT Transfer Station Operator or pass certification within three months
  • Possession of a valid Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License Class A
