The Town of Southbury is hiring a full-time Assistant Tax Collector. This position is 35 hours/week and offers a comprehensive benefits package including paid vacation, sick and personal leave, defined contribution plan with Town match, medical, dental and vision insurance and life and long-term disability insurance. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position provides administrative and customer support to the Tax Department in the billing and collection of Town revenues.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with processing online, mail and in-person real estate, motor vehicle and personal property tax payments.
- Reconcile daily and weekly bank deposits and maintain proper recording.
- Prepare tax bills for mailing by updating addresses and processing certificates of correction.
- Receive and verify payments and post in computer system; follow-up with taxpayers, mortgage companies and banks on unpaid balances and overpayments.
- Coordinate with the Assessor’s Office in recording new or amended property information as well as the Motor Vehicle Department about vehicle ownership changes and delinquent motor vehicle taxes.
- Meet with the public to explain tax collection policy, resolve routine complaints and provide tax information to the public, attorney, banks and realtors.
- Assist with special and routine reports and preparation of the official record of all taxes levied and collected.
- Calculate and receive interest and penalties on past due bills, maintain refund records and issue tax refunds.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal tax collection, tax laws, rules and regulations and knowledge of bookkeeping practices.
- Ability to interact effectively with colleagues and the public and possession of excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite. Tax collection software experience preferred.
- Ability to prioritize job tasks and multitask to meet statutory deadlines.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school plus two to three years of related experience. Must possess CCMC certification or obtain within 3 years of hire. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
