The Town of Southbury is hiring a full-time Fire Marshal. The position is 35 hours/week and offers a comprehensive benefits package including paid vacation, sick and personal leave, defined contribution plan with match, medical, dental and vision insurance as well as life and long-term disability insurance. Salary is commensurate with experience.
This position is responsible for planning, organizing and administering comprehensive fire inspections, investigations and prevention and education programs in accordance with the Connecticut General Statutes and CT Fire Safety Code.
Responsibilities:
- Supervises department personnel and provides direction to Deputy Fire Marshals.
- Develops and manages the department budget and provides financial oversight of departmental activities.
- Completes building plan reviews for new construction, alterations and additions for all commercial buildings in town.
- Conducts fire inspections in all applicable occupancies to determine the presence of fire hazards and the adequacy of fire protection equipment and systems.
- Investigates local fires and explosions as to cause and origin and prepares reports for the State.
- Follows up on suspicious fires to determine any wrongdoing and recommends enforcement action as necessary.
- Develops and promotes a Community Risk Reduction Program, providing fire safety education to the general public.
- Issues open burning and fireworks permits.
- Certifies day care centers, health care centers and liquor permit premises for State licensing.
- Inspects underground and above ground storage tank operations. Oversees installation of water storage tanks and records removal of fuel tanks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of Connecticut Life Safety Code, CT Fire Prevention Code and referenced codes and standards.
- Knowledge of community fire protection needs and requirements, Incident Command System (ICS), fire investigation methods and techniques and fire safety and prevention and protection practices.
- Ability to read, interpret and enforce fire codes and regulations.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to foster relationships and deal effectively with officials, business owners, outside agencies, employees, and the general public.
- Written and verbal communication skills necessary to prepare and present fire safety prevention and fire safety education programs as well as reports and correspondence.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have current and valid State of Connecticut Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal Certification.
- Graduation from high school plus associate degree in Fire Science or related field.
- Three to five years of supervisory experience related to Fire Marshal or firefighting duties. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Must possess or obtain certification as an Open Burning Official.
- Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle License.
