8/26/2024 - Employment Opportunity: Part-time Custodian

The Town of Southbury is hiring a part-time Custodian. The position is 20-25 hours/week and offers sick, vacation and holiday pay. Salary range is $20.00-$22.00/hour. This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining public buildings and entrances, keeping them safe, sanitary and neat in appearance.

Responsibilities:

  • Vacuums rugs, strips and waxes floors, wet mops floors and sweeps.
  • Dusts furniture, finishes and equipment.
  • Cleans glass, windows and mirrors.
  • Empties trash and recycling containers.
  • Inspects, sanitizes, cleans and stocks restrooms daily.
  • Plans custodial work so that within reasonable periods of time and on a rotating basis all areas under his/her care receive a thorough cleaning.
  • Maintains inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies and supports supervisor in ordering stock.
  • Obtains and maintains hazardous materials data sheets on relevant supplies.
  • Responds to mechanical, plumbing and electrical emergencies.
  • Removes snow at building entrances and immediately adjacent sidewalks to town buildings during regular work hours and on-call.
  • Completes patching and painting projects.
  • Regularly inspects and cleans building entrances of leaves, trash, hazards etc.
  • Performs HVAC seasonal maintenance.
  • Completes basic carpentry repairs and furniture assembly.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to read and follow safety procedures and written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to observe and address custodial and maintenance requirements based upon physical conditions.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment, procedures, supplies and materials.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance equipment, procedures, supplies, and materials.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures.
  • Willingness to continue education and training.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED with 1 year of related experience. Equivalent combinations of education, experience and training may be considered.
  • Possession of a valid Connecticut Driver's License is a requirement for this job.
