9/27/2024 - Employment Opportunity: Deputy Fire Marshal

The Town of Southbury is hiring a part-time Deputy Fire Marshal. This position is up to 20 hours per week with a salary range of $26.00-$28.00 per hour and offers paid sick, vacation and personal leave.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces the CT Life Safety Code including inspection of various occupancies, performs investigations of fires, hazardous materials incidents, and other incidents falling under CT State Fire Safety and Prevention Code as stated in CGS Chapter 541 and all other applicable Federal, State and local laws and ordinances.
  • Responds to concerns/complaints regarding fire code violations and hazards.
  • Issues permits and enforces local, State and Federal fire code regulations.
  • Assists with developing and implementing fire prevention programs.
  • Inspects and issues permits for use, transportation and storage of explosives. Conducts site inspections for use of fireworks.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for new construction, alterations and additions for all commercial buildings.
  • Interacts with customers in a professional and timely manner.
  • Works with various agencies in the promotion and development of fire, life and injury prevention safety programs.
  • Manages various programs for inspection of properties for hazard identification, risk reductions, and code enforcement.
  • Attends training courses, seminars, and meetings to maintain knowledge.
  • Fosters relationships, interrelate, and deal effectively with officials, business owners, outside agencies, employees, and the general public.
  • Prepares and present accurate oral and written reports and correspondence.
  • Exercises considerable independent judgment in performing the duties of this position while enforcing in an unbiased and professional manner the fire code.
  • Be available for emergency call back.

Qualifications (Minimum)

  • Must obtain State of Connecticut Fire Marshal Certification within two years of hire.
  • Must meet requirements of CGS 29-298.
  • Graduation from high school and two years of related experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current certification as a State of Connecticut Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector, or Fire Investigator.
  • Experience in conducting fire and life safety code inspections for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Knowledge of Connecticut Life Safety Code, CT Fire Prevention Code and referenced codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of community fire protection needs and requirements, Incident Command System (ICS), fire investigation methods and techniques and fire safety, prevention and protection practices.
  • Ability to read, interpret and enforce fire codes and regulations.
  • Local residence within 20 miles of Southbury Town Hall.

Physical Requirements

  • Applicants must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  • Applicants may be required to pass a physical exam.

Working Conditions

The Deputy Fire Marshal performs work in a combination of office settings and in field locations. Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently required to handle or operate objects, controls, tools, and equipment. Occasionally, the employee is required to reach; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb or balance. The employee works in outdoor weather conditions being exposed to cold, heat, rain, snow, and wind. Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fire, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee may be exposed to rodents, insects and other wildlife. The noise level in the office setting is usually low and moderate to loud in the field.
