12/30/2024 - Employment Opportunity: Summer Camp Counselor for TeenScape Camp

Southbury Parks and Recreation Department is hiring Summer Camp Counselor for TeenScape Camp.

Position Summary:

The TeenScape Counselor is responsible for youth in their assigned group. The Counselor is also responsible for implementing camp activities when necessary, and is responsible for health and safety procedures, especially when off-site. They will collaborate with other counselors and will assist the Camp Coordinator as instructed. The Counselor will receive supervision until he or she is familiar with the recreation program and the techniques and standards approved by the department. Work is subject to regular inspection and review for conformity to established methods and standards.

Supervision Received:

Receives direct supervision and performance reviews by the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, Director of Parks and Recreation, and Aquatics Supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of camp/recreation activities including sports and games.
  • General knowledge of the rules of popular athletic activities.
  • Ability to plan and organize simple recreation activities.
  • Ability to follow directions and get along with fellow counselors.
  • Familiarity with the care and use of recreation equipment.
  • Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid for Adult and Pediatric Care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the organization of games and maintains discipline at indoor and outdoor play area.
  • Assists in teaching the various games and rules of play.
  • Observes necessary precautions to secure safety of recreation participants and spectators, and renders routine first aid in case of minor injury.
  • Supervises campers on field trips and enforces location site rules with campers.
  • Possesses some knowledge of leadership techniques.
  • Familiarity with the care and use of recreation equipment.
  • Administer First Aid/CPR/AED as needed.
  • Ability to get along with fellow employees and participants.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old by June 1, 2025.
  • Must be certified in CPR/AED and First Aid or obtain the certification by June 1, 2025.

Pay:

  • $16.35/hour.
  • Not to exceed 40 hours per week.
