What’s Orienteering? It’s like going for a hike, but with a twist. With map and compass in hand, you find your way to checkpoints along the orienteering course. You can stay on trails or short-cut through the woods. Orienteering is also a competitive sport. Those who take a competitive approach go around the course as quickly as they can. Since you must decide on your route while running or walking fast, it's a challenging sport that requires using your head as well as your legs. Whether you walk or run, it's a way of keeping fit while having fun.
Join the fun with Southbury Land Trust and Southbury Parks and Rec as we introduce you to the sport of Orienteering. Rick and Susan DeWitt with Western CT Orienteering Club will lead a 90-minute introduction to the sport of orienteering. We’re targeting people who are new to the sport—adults and adults with children. We’ll teach people the basic skills required for the sport: how to read an orienteering map, how to use a compass to orient the map, and the rules for completing an orienteering course. We’ll also cover some basic safety skills useful for general hiking such as taking a safety bearing.
