6/14/2021 - Faith Vicinanza July 2021 Exhibit at Southbury Public Library

The Gloria Cachion Gallery at the Southbury Public Library will host artist Faith Vicinanza “Color Meditations,” an exhibit of mandala paintings, photography, acrylic and oil abstracts from Friday, July 2nd, 2021 through Thursday, July 29th, 2021.

Ms. Vicinanza is a widely published poet, a recipient of the CT Commission on the Arts “Advocate for the Arts Award,” and by day makes her living as a cybersecurity professional in a field that is a mere 18% women worldwide. In recent years, she has focused her artistic efforts on a form called ‘dot painting’.

Faith’s dot paintings take time, are meditative and focused. The defining criterion for a dot painting is the technique itself – repeated imprints of a paint covered brush, dotting stick or other implement onto the painting surface and in doing so, there are recognizable ‘dot’ marks on the painting surface. Pointillism, which leans more to being abstract than to having the discipline of a modern dot painting, is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. Dot painting, however, seeks a level of perfection and precision in the dots that is not inherent in pointillism.

The word mandala comes from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Literally, mandala means “circle.” The circle is seen as a magical form, without beginning and end, just as the universe is believed to have no end. Ms. Vicinanza’s work is sometimes driven by or centered on or informed by the idea of a mandala though not strictly. In her often over-committed life, dot painting has become a way to stop, sit, clear her mind, be with the paint, the patterns, allowing her pieces to emerge organically and rarely does she have a set idea of where the painting will go. This approach produces unique, one-of-a-kind works that are distinct and drenched in color.

Over the years Faith’s photography has been focused on the rich colors of the natural world. Color immersion defines Ms. Vicinanza’s style in all respects. The exhibit will be open during regular library hours which are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am to 9:00pm and Saturdays 9:30am to 4:00pm. The exhibit will also be online too as a virtual gallery.
