6/21/2021 - The Rutledge Summer Series: Travel from Home Presents: Ancient Olympics on July 22, 2021

On Thursday, July 22th, 2021 from 6:30-8pm on Zoom or watch it from our Kingsley Room, join us for an exploration of the art from the Ancient Olympics

Every two years, the modern Olympic Games are held, but now you can learn about their ancient predecessor through art. We’ll explore how this religious event in southern Greece, occurring each fourth summer, developed over the course of 1,100 years and see how it helped unite Greek speakers scattered across the ancient world.

Mike Norris received his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and has lectured on trips all over the world.

Like all Southbury Public Library programs, this program is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of town of residency. The Rutledge Summer Series was made possible by the Charles H. and Ella Emery Rutledge Fund. Registration is required. Zoom invitation links will be sent via email on the day of the program.
