6/28/2021 - Wednesday at the Movies - July 2021

Wednesday afternoon movies are being shown again at Southbury Public Library, starting on the second Wednesday of the month. These are offered free to the public, but registration is required due to limited space with chairs spread apart. However, if two people who have come together wish to sit together, they can be accommodated. To Register: call 203-262-0626 ext 130 or e-mail www.southburylibrary.org.

Showing on July 14 is a British 2019 comedy-drama inspired by real-life events. It centers on a group of women whose partners are serving in Afghanistan and who, despite their different backgrounds, come together to form a choir. They soon become a media sensation and set off a global movement, with choirs forming not only in Britain but around the world. Kristin Scott Thomas stars. This film is rated PG-13.

The film being shown on July 21 (PG) is based on a childhood classic Jack London novel. It tells the story of a much-pampered dog named Buck, stolen from his comfortable California home and transported to the Alaskan Yukon during the 1890s gold-rush there. Buck must learn to adapt to a less civilized world and finds his true place in it. Harrison Ford and Dan Stevens are the main humans involved.

The July 28th film, set in 1800s England, is the 2020 version of this Jane Austen novel that has made several previous screen appearances. It focuses on a well-meaning but selfish woman who meddles in the love lives of her friends. This time she is played by Anna Taylor-Joy; Bill Nighy plays her father. (PG)

Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list the titles of the films, which are sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. All the films start at 1:00 pm in the Kingsley Meeting Room Surround Sound Theater. All have closed captions, and infrared listening system is available.
