7/28/2021 - Wednesday at the Movies

Wednesday afternoon movies are being shown again at Southbury Public Library, starting on the second Wednesday of the month. These are offered free to the public, but registration is required due to limited space with chairs spread apart. However, if two people who have come together wish to sit together, they can be accommodated. To Register: call 203-262-0626 ext 130 or go online at www.southburylibrary.org.

The first film, on August 11, should be of interest to Agatha Christie fans. This British import, released in 2018, presents an alternative history of true events in England in 1926 involving the then-young crime novelist’s 11-day disappearance and her decision to solve the real-life murder of Florence Nightingale’s goddaughter. As a result, Christie is able to get her stalled writing restarted with new focus. Ruth Bradley stars. (This film was not rated)

The August 18th film, a 2020 release from Australia, is a comedy-drama in which a group of veterans who, years earlier, had broken out of a Vietnamese POW camp find themselves again in a prison – a retirement home – and again break out in an attempt to fulfill their dreams. James Cromwell, Shane Jacobson and Dennis Waterman are the principal players. (TV-14)

The August 25th film, released in 2020, brings a look back at another war, WWII. The setting is a coastal English town, where an aging woman reminisces about the time she opened her home and heart to a young evacuee after initially resolving to be rid of him. Gemma Arterton plays the younger version as she makes her journey into womanhood, love and friendship. Tom Courtnay plays a helpful fellow townsman (PG).

Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list the titles of the films, which are sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. All the films start at 1:00 pm in the Kingsley Meeting Room Surround Sound Theater. All have closed captions, and an infrared listening system is available.
