3/14/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for April 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for April 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a mix of in-person and virtual events this month. Children’s Programs:

Open House Take & Make Craft – Saturday, April 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
Stop by the Youth Services department every Saturday to take home a thematic craft. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, April 4, 11, 18 & 25 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Heather for stories and songs every Monday. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Babies & Books Storytime – Tuesday, April 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Babies and Books is an interactive lapsit program for babies age 6-24 months and their parents and caregivers. Space is limited. Registration required.

Toddler Time Storytime – Wednesday, April 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Parents and caregivers are invited to join their toddlers ages 2 and 3 for theme based stories, songs, and a craft. Space is limited. Registration required.

Babies & Books Storytime – Thursday, April 7, 14, 21 & 28 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room
Children ages 4 and 5 able to and pay attention independently are invited to listen to longer stories and complete a craft or activity. Space is limited. Registration required.

Food Explorers Online: Pasta Fagioli – Wednesday, April 6 at 5:30 pm on Zoom
Join the Registered Dietitians of Food Explorers to make a warm and cozy dinner. We're making Pasta Fagioli soup. Ages 7 & up and families. Registration is required.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, April 12 & 26 at 5 pm in the Storytime room
Stop by on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, April 14 at 11:00 am in the Kingsley Room
Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

STEAMonday: April Showers – Monday, April 18 at 4:15 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join us for an afternoon learning about the water cycle by making rain cloud in a jar. Please wear something you don't mind getting messy in or bring a covering. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Space is limited. Registration required.

Rock Painting with the Southbury Garden Club – Saturday, April 23 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room.
The Southbury Garden Club is back with a fun art program. Ages 10 & up. Space is limited. Registration required.

Spring Terrarium Craft – Thursday, April 28 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join Miss Heather and Miss Katie to make a spring terrarium. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

Food Explorers In-Person: Burrito Bowls – Tuesday, April 12 from 6-7pm in the Kingsley Room
Join Food for an evening of food fun! You’ll test your food knowledge with a game of Nutrition Jeopardy and make your own delicious Burrito Bowls for dinner! This recipe will be nut free and each teen will make their own portion, with no sharing of ingredients or equipment. Space is limited. Grades 6-12. Registration required.

Protect Your Peeps – Wednesday, April 13 from 2-3pm in the Storytime Room
Multiple Teams, Multiple Peeps. One Goal: Destroy the other teams' peeps before they destroy yours. Spend the first part of the program building forts to protect your peeps and the next part of the program trying to destroy the other teams' peeps with marshmallows. All materials will be provided. Please note: Peeps and marshmallows both contain gelatin. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required

DIY Blackout Poetry – Thursday, April 14 from 4-5pm in the Kingsley Room
April is National Poetry Month. Join us in person to create black out poetry, a fun and easy way to make poetry and art, and upcycle old book pages. With blackout poetry, you take an already existing page of text and cross out all the words you don’t want to keep in your poem. You can cross them out with straight lines, squiggles, or anything you like to create a unique mix between poetry and art. Supplies will be provided. Grades 6-12. Registration required

Teen To-Go Craft Kits: Earth Plush Keychain – Starting Monday, April 18
Pick up complete kits to make a pocket-sized panda from the Teen Department while supplies last. Each kit will have instructions and all supplies needed (except scissors). Kits are not limited per person, but we ask that you only take what you (and siblings or friends you are crafting with) need. Grades 6-12. Third Thursday Game Night: Pictionary – Thursday, April 21 from 6-7pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us in person to play Pictionary in a group setting! We'll use our biggest whiteboard to make this larger-than-usual game extra fun! Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Advisory Board – Tuesday, April 26 from 6-7 pm in the Youth Services Tutor Corner
We are looking for creative, energetic volunteers in grades 6-12 who are interested in making a difference at the Southbury Public Library! Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members can directly influence our teen book and AV collections, teen programming and events, and other teen services. Each monthly meeting opens with a discussion about ideas for programs, materials, and more and closes out with some special volunteer projects. If you are interested in serving on the Teen Advisory Board, you can apply to be considered on our website at www.southburylibrary.org/tab.

Food Explorers Online: Raspberry Cheesecake Brownies – Wednesday, April 27 from 5-6pm on Zoom.
Join Food Explorers to make Raspberry Cheesecake Brownies! This recipe takes your average brownie up a notch with a raspberry cheesecake filling. Cook along with us over Zoom from the comfort of your very own kitchen. Space is limited for time to answer individual questions and walk everyone through this program. Grades 6-12 and their families. Space is limited. Registration required.
