9/12/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for October 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for October 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. All programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. For more information and to register online please visit our website: www.southburylibrary.org/events

Children’s Programs:

Farmers’ Market – Thursday, October 6 from 3:30-5:30pm at the Southbury Town Hall Green. Drop by and join the Southbury librarians for an afternoon of reading and crafts while you shop at the Farmers’ Market. All ages welcome.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, October 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, October 3, 17, 24 & 31 at 10:30 am in the Storytime room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday except Columbus Day. All ages welcome. No registration required.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, October 11 at 5 pm in the Storytime room. Stop by on the second Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Bookmark Bunch Book Club - Thursday, October 13 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime room. Join Miss Jen for our new elementary age book club. Each month we’ll read a different fiction chapter book. This month’s book is Escape from Mr. Limoncello’s Library by Chris Grabensein. Pick up a copy at the Youth Services desk any time after September 13. Grades 3-5. Registration required.

Preschool Skills Mornings - Friday, October 14 & 28 at 10 am in the Storytime Room. Preschoolers are invited to drop in for a fun and informal skill building session. Play and practice using thematic morning bins. Ages 2-5. No registration required.

Scarecrow Door Hanging – Saturday, October 15 at 11:30 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the Southbury Garden Club to make a festive fall scarecrow door hanging decoration. Ages 10-18. Registration required.

CT Humane Society: Paws and Pages - Tuesday, October 18 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime Room. This program is designed for early learners interested in pets. A CHS humane educator will share a pet-themed book and then lead an interactive discussion about safe and kind interactions with the type of companion animal featured in the book. There will be no live animals at this event. Ages 3-5. Registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, October 20 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

October Book Witch Craft - Thursday, October 20 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Katie for an afternoon of crafting. This month we’re recycling old book pages into a cute book witch. Grades 2-5. Registration is required.

CT Humane Society: Safety PAWtrol - Friday, October 21 at 4:15 pm in the Kingsley Room. This interactive program will teach children how to be safe around dogs. Participants will learn how to read dog body language and how to safely approach, greet, and interact with dogs. There will not be live animals present for this program. Ages 5-12. Registration required.

Annie & the Natural Wonder Band Fall Program – Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. The Natural Wonder Band is back! Rock out to festive fall and slightly spooky songs with Annie and Safari Bob. All ages welcome. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

The Great Oreo Taste Test – Tuesday, October 4 from 6-7 pm in the Brown Room. Original, Double Stuf, Lemon, Birthday Cake, Mint, and more! Which Oreo flavor will reign supreme? We'll sample a variety of Oreo flavors to figure out our favorites, and crown one Oreo the best of all! Nuts, dairy, and gluten will be present in this program. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Trivia Tuesdays: Halloween Edition – Tuesday, October 11 from 6-7 pm in the Brown Room. Join us for a frightfully fun trivia contest! This month will be themed around Halloween, so we’ll have questions about pumpkins, animals like bats and spiders, horror movies, and more. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Scarecrow Door Hanging – Saturday, October 15 at 11:30 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the Southbury Garden Club to make a festive fall scarecrow door hanging decoration. Ages 10-18. Registration required.

Teen DIY: Book Pumpkins – Monday, October 17 from 4-5 pm in the Brown Room. Join us to upcycle an old book into a pumpkin! These gourd-geous crafts are surprisingly easy to make. All supplies provided. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Minute to Win It Mondays – Monday, October 24 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Fast-paced and fun, you’ve got one minute to succeed in these silly challenges! Everyone wins because they’re as fun to play as they are to watch. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Food Explorers Chocolate Croissant Bites Cooking Class – Wednesday, October 26 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers to create a delicious sweet treat! What do you get when you put together crescent roll dough and chocolate hummus? (Yes, hummus, but we promise it's great!) Chocolate Croissant Bites! Roll out your dough, fill with chocolate hummus and seal them up tight, then watch them transform in the cake pop machine to delicious golden brown treats. This recipe is nut free, but may contain dairy and/or eggs. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Fall Book Bingo – Ongoing through Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Pick up a Book Bingo Card and make Bingo by reading books in different fun categories to make rows horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Making bingo (or multiples) can earn you raffle entries for a $50 Visa Gift Card! Fill out your whole card and get a special library mug with candy inside! Grades 6-12.
