10/12/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for November 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for November 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:

10 Tips to Reduce Stress – Tuesday, November 1 from 4:30-5:30pm (grades K-2) & 6-7pm (grades 3-5) in the Kingsley Room. Children, parents, educators, and caregivers are invited to join Dr. Wendy Hurwitz for a presentation to learn the differences between good stress, bad stress and how stress impacts the body. Learn techniques to minimize stress and maximize vitality. We are offering this program in two sessions, each targeted at children of different ages.

Food Explorers: S’mores Cups - Wednesday, November 2 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Make a delicious treat with the registered nutritionists from Food Explorers. This month, cozy up with a s’mores inspired dessert cup. Ages 7 & up. Registration required.

Preschool Skills Afternoons - Friday, November 4 & 18 at 1 pm in the Storytime Room. Preschoolers are invited to drop in for a fun and informal skill building session. Play and practice using thematic morning bins. Ages 2-5. No registration required.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, November 5, 12, 19 & 26. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, November 7, 14, 21 & 28 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday. All ages welcome. No registration required.

PJ Storytime - Thursday, November 10 at 6 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jen for snuggly stories and a craft. Feel free to wear your pjs and bring your favorite stuffed animal. All ages welcome. No registration required.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, November 15 at 5 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Renee for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Taco About Stef Soto, Taco Queen - Thursday, November 17 at 6 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jen for our new elementary age book club. Each month we’ll read a different fiction chapter book. This month’s book is Stef Soto, Taco Queen by Jennifer Torres. Learn how to make your own tortillas and snack on some homemade tacos. Pick up a copy at the Youth Services desk any time after October 17. Grades 3-5. Registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Tuesday, November 22 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

Teen Programs:

10 Tips to Manage Stress – Thursday, November 3 from 6-7 pm in the Kingsley Room. Even though stress happens to all of us, going through stressful times with less stress can be a learned skill. Join us as Dr. Wendy Hurwitz presents techniques to minimize stress and maximize vitality. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required. Teen Fall Scene Craft – Monday, November 7 from 4-5pm in the Storytime Room. Join us as staff member Katie shows us how to make autumnal inspired woodland scenes using (mostly) natural materials. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Chopped! with Food Explorers – Wednesday, November 9 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers to test your creativity like you’re on an episode of Chopped! Get into teams, create a delicious recipe together based on a limited pantry that’s proved. Then taste test both teams' creations to see whose is the tastiest! All food is nut free, but may contain dairy and/or eggs. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen DIY: Hexagon Shelves – Monday, November 14 from 4-5 pm in the Brown Room. Join us to make fun and easy hexagon shelves! We'll provide all the supplies you need. All supplies provided. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Trivia Tuesday – Tuesday, November 15 from 6-7 pm in the Kingsley B Room. Join us for a fun trivia contest! Test your knowledge of topics like books, geography, animals, space, and more! Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Minute to Win It Mondays – Monday, November 28 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Fast-paced and fun, you’ve got one minute to succeed in these silly challenges! Everyone wins because they’re as fun to play as they are to watch. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Fall Book Bingo – Ongoing through Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Pick up a Book Bingo Card and make Bingo by reading books in different fun categories to make rows horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Making bingo (or multiples) can earn you raffle entries for a $50 Visa Gift Card! Fill out your whole card and get a special library mug with candy inside! Grades 6-12.
