The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for January 2023 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:
I Spy Bear Hunt - January 3-31 in the Youth Services Department. Join us for an I Spy style scavenger hunt. The bears have escaped from their books! Bear characters from children’s literature hidden throughout the Youth Services department. Complete the scavenger hunt and receive a small prize.
ARTuesday – Tuesday, January 3 at 5 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Renee for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In. No registration required.
Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, January 7, 14, 21 & 28. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.
Drop-In Storytime – Monday, January 9, 23 & 30 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday. All ages welcome. No registration required.
Babies & Books Storytime – Tuesday, January 10, 17, 24 & 31 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room Babies and Books is an interactive lapsit program for babies ages 6-24 months and their parents and caregivers. Space is limited. Registration required.
Toddler Time Storytime – Wednesday, January 11, 18 & 25 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room Parents and caregivers are invited to join their toddlers ages 2 and 3 for theme based stories, songs, and a craft. Space is limited. Registration required.
Stories & More Storytime – Thursday, January 13, 19 & 26 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room Children ages 4 and 5 able to and pay attention independently are invited to listen to longer stories and complete a craft or activity. Space is limited. Registration required.
Storytime with the Southbury Police Department - Tuesday, January 10 at 5 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Officer Liz and friends for an evening of stories and crafts. All ages welcome. No registration required.
Build Your Own Sticker Book: Music History – Tuesday, January 17 at 5 pm in the Brown Room. Join us for the first ever Build your Own Sticker Book Family Night! Register as families or groups and answer music history trivia while making your own sticker book. All ages. Registration required.
Animal Crossing Character Clay Pots - Thursday, January 12 at 4:30-6 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Katie to make another fun craft project. Choose your favorite character from Animal Crossing and get crafty! Grades 2-5. Registration required
Memory Jars - Thursday, November 17 at 6 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jen for our new elementary age book club. Each month we’ll read a different fiction chapter book. This month’s book is Memory Jars by Vera Brosgol. To kick off the new year, we’re making our own memory jars. Pick up a copy at the Youth Services desk any time after December 15. Grades 3-5. Tiny Food Explorers – Tuesday, January 17 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Meditation for Kids: 3 Approaches - Tuesday, January 24 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room. Dr. Wendy Hurwitz is back to teach us three different approaches to mediation. Grades 4-8. Families, teachers and caregivers are welcome. Registration required.
PJ Storytime - Thursday, January 26 at 6 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jen for snuggly stories and a craft. Feel free to wear your pjs and bring your favorite stuffed animal. All ages welcome. No registration required.
Teen Programs:
Teen DIY: Book Hedgehogs – Monday, January 9 from 4-5 pm in the Brown Room. Join us to make hedgehogs out of old books! We'll also have supplies you can use to give your hedgehog some personality in the form of clothes or accessories. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
Teen Trivia Tuesday – Tuesday, January 10 from 6-7 pm in the Brown Room. Join us for a fun trivia contest! Test your knowledge of topics like books, geography, animals, space, and more! With some questions being multiple choice, we'll have a range of difficulties. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
Memory Tips for Teens – Monday, January 17 from 4-5 pm in the Storytime Room. Join us to learn memory tips that may help with school, preparing for exams, and more with Dr. Wendy Hurwitz. We’ll take the tips and techniques used by memory athletes and go through how you can use them in your own life. Please note: this program is fragrance free. Grades 6-12. Registration required.
Food Explorers: Red Velvet Trifles – Thursday, January 19 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a sweet and delicious cooking class! You’ll be making Red Velvet Trifles: loaded with homemade red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting made from scratch. Recipe is nut free but will contain eggs, dairy, and gluten. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
Minute to Win It Monday – Monday, January 23 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Fast-paced and fun, you’ve got one minute to succeed in these silly challenges! Everyone wins because they’re as fun to play as they are to watch. Find out more and register on our website here.
