The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for May 2023 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:
Drop-In Storytime – Monday, May 1, 8, 15, 22 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday. All ages welcome. No registration required.
Babies & Books – Tuesday, May 2, 9, 16 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. This is part of a series. Babies & Books is a lapsit program for children 6 to 24 months and their parents/caregivers. Listen to short stories and songs. Registration required. Waitlist only.
ARTuesday – Tuesday, May 2 at 5 pm in the Storytime room. Stop by for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.
Toddler Time – Wednesday, May 3, 10, 17 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. This is part of a series. Toddler Time is for children ages 2 & 3 years and their parents/caregivers. Listen to stories and complete a small craft. Registration required. Waitlist only.
Stories and More - Thursday, May 4, 11, 18 at 10:30 am in the Storytime Room. This is part of a series. Stories & Crafts is for children ages 4 & 5 able to sit and pay attention independently. Listen to stories and complete a craft or activity. Registration required.
Upcycled Critter Seed Starter Pots - Thursday, May 4 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime Room. Welcome the warmer weather with a planting craft! You will make a planter from an upcycled water bottle and plant a seed of your choice, while learning about planting and plant needs. Grades 2-5. Registration required.
Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, May 6, 13, 20, 27. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.
Tiny Food Explorers – Tuesday, May 9 at 11:00 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required.
Flower Arranging with the Southbury Garden Club - Saturday, May 13 at 11:30 am in the Kingsley Room. Celebrate Spring with a festive bouquet! Join the Southbury Garden Club for a lesson in flower arranging. Each participant will leave with a beautiful floral arrangement in a vase. Ages 7 & up. Registration required.
Spring Family Storytime - Saturday, May 13 at 1:00 pm in the Storytime Room. Join us for a special storytime for the whole family. We will share some stories and songs together. Parents and older siblings are encouraged to join in for this family event. All ages welcome. No registration required.
Spring Fairy Party - Saturday, May 20 at 1:00 pm in the Brown Room. Come join Miss Katie in your fairy best fairy finery to hear a fairy story, complete a fairy wand and crown craft, and take photos in our themed photo op area! Ages 6-10. Registration required.
Planting STEAM Program - Tuesday, May 30 at 5:00 pm in the Storytime Room. This is a two-part series, held on May 30th and June 13th. On May 30th, join Miss Katie to decorate your own terra cotta pot and plant seeds. You will leave your new plant at the library to germinate. On June 13th, you will learn about how to care for your seed as it grows and the needs of plants, hear a story about gardening, and take your new plant home! Ages 6-10. Registration required.
Teen Programs:
Star Wars Crafts - Thursday, May 4 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Brown Room. May the Fourth be with you! Celebrate Star Wars Day with us with an assortment of crafts that come from a galaxy far, far away. We'll have perler bead patterns, lightsaber earrings, and more! Grades 6-12. Registration required.
Food Explorers: Mini Lemon Pies - Thursday, May 11 from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a sweet and seasonal treat! You’ll be making Mini Lemon Pies by making your own graham cracker crust, a delicious lemon filling and homemade whipped cream. Recipe is nut free but will contain eggs, dairy, and gluten. Grades 6-12. Registration required.
Rare and Remarkable Animals in Connecticut - Tuesday, May 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Did you know that we have endangered species right here in CT? Join the White Memorial Conservation Center to learn what local species are considered in peril, why they’re each important, and what we can do to help them. Plus, you’ll get to meet a couple of live creatures up close and personal! Grades 6-12. Registration required.
The Great Potato Chip Taste Off - Thursday, May 18 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Salt and vinegar, barbeque, kettle-cooked, ruffles, and more! Which potato chip will reign supreme? We'll sample a variety of chips to figure out our favorites, and crown one chip the best of all! Grades 6-12. Registration required.
