6/14/2023 - Children’s and Teen Programs for July 2023

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for July 2023 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. All programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. For more information and to register online please visit our website: www.southburylibrary.org/events.

Children’s Programs:

Summer Reading Continues! – Now through Friday August 4. Register online or in person at the Second Floor Circulation Desk. You can register in person, or online with our easy-to-use tracker, BeanStack! Log your reading time, attend fun events, and participate in other activities! See our website for details at www.southburylibrary.org/summer-reading.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

July 4th Flower Arranging with the Southbury Garden Club - Saturday, July 1 from 11:30am-1pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the Southbury Garden Club to create July 4th-themed flower arrangements! Ages 7 & up. Space is limited. Registration required.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 from 10:00-10:30am or 11:00-11:30am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Bring the Hoopla: Ages 3-5 – Saturday, July 8 from 10:00-10:30am in the Kingsley Room. Using our signature Hoopla Hoops, participants engage in basic hoop instruction, age & theme-appropriate games, and positive activities. This program encourages self-expression and creativity! Our skilled teachers come equipped with a sound system and help all participants learn a new spin on hula hooping. Registration required.

Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Stories and More – Thursday, July 13, 20, 27 from 10:30-11:00am in the Storytime Room. This is part of a series. Stories & Crafts is for children ages 4 & 5 able to sit and pay attention independently. Listen to stories and complete a craft or activity. Registration required.

Food Explorers: Strawberry Mousse Cups – Thursday, July 13 from 3:00-4:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a delicious summer cooking program! You’ll be making Strawberry Mousse Cups: graham cracker crust, a sweet strawberry filling and fresh strawberries. Recipe is nut free but will contain dairy. Ages 6 & up. Registration required. Find Your Voice Music Program – Friday, July 14 from 10:30-11:30am in the Kingsley Room. Join us for Find Your Voice, an all-ages participatory music program featuring chants, call & responses and singable songs. All ages. Registration required.

Wee Wings with Horizon Wings – Monday, July 17 from 1:00-1:45pm in the Kingsley Room. What do you do if you find a baby bird? Join Horizon Wings to find out in this special program! This Wee Wings program will feature three raptors and an informative talk about what to do if you find a baby bird in your yard. This event is aimed at ages 3 and up; families are invited to attend together. Registration required.

CT Humane Society: Paws and Pages – Tuesday, July 18 from 1:00-2:00pm in the Storytime Room. This program is designed for early learners interested in pets. A CHS humane educator will share a pet-themed book and then lead an interactive discussion about safe and kind interactions with the type of companion animal featured in the book. Ages 4 to 7. Registration required.

ARTuesday For Ages 3-6 – Tuesday, July 18 from 5:00-6:00pm in the Storytime room. Stop by for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Soulshine Arts: Music Together - Wednesday, July 19 from 10:30-11:30am in the Kingsley Room. Leslie Pratt of Soulshine Arts in Woodbury invites children ages birth to 5 years old and their caregivers to join in a morning of family music! Join us as we sing, dance and play while bonding with your children through music. Ages birth to 5. Registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, July 20 from 1:30-2:30pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! Come and explore new flavors and textures while playing games all about food and MyPlate! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters. Ages 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Ryan SanAngelo Music Program – Saturday, July 22 from 10:30-11:30am in the Kingsley Room. Ryan SanAngelo is a children’s author, music performer, and an all-around cool guy. Plus, he grew up here in Southbury! Get ready to laugh, dance, move, groove, and enjoy a super-fun 45 minute show! Books will be available for purchase. This program is recommended for ages 3-7, but all are welcome. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

Book Hedgehogs & Possums – Friday, July 7 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Brown Room. Join us to make hedgehogs (or possums!) out of old books! We'll also have supplies you can use to give your hedgehog or possum some personality in the form of clothes or accessories. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Food Explorers: Loaded Avocado Boats – Monday, July 10 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Brown Room. Join Food Explorers for a delicious summer cooking program! You’ll be making Loaded Avocado Boats! Create your own delicious filling and scoop out an avocado to create this cool snack. Recipe is nut free but may contain dairy. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

CT Humane Society: Pet Professions – Wednesday, July 12 from 3:00-3:45pm in the Brown Room. Get a look at the wide array of careers in the animal welfare field from the CT Humane Society! You’ll learn about the skills and education needed for different positions and hear about a typical work day from CHS staff. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Learn to Play the Ukulele – Friday, July 14 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Want to try an instrument that is fun and easy to play? Join Julie Stepanek as she shows the fundamentals of ukulele playing, which really can be learned in an hour. No experience necessary. Ukuleles provided. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Horizon Wings: Principles of Flight – Monday, July 17 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Kingsley Room. What makes a bird able to fly? Explore the differences in the flying and hunting techniques of four species of raptors, including an American Kestrel, a Peregrine Falcon, a Red-Tailed or Broad-winged Hawk, an owl, and an eagle. What makes an American Kestrel able to “kite”? What are the special anatomical features that make the Peregrine Falcon the fastest creature on the planet? Grades 6-12 & All Ages. Registration is required.

Leather Workshop: Make a Wallet or Bracelet – Tuesday, July 18 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Vanessa Fasanella to make a basic wallet or bracelet out of your choice out of high quality leather. Customize your project! Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Food Explorers: Rainbow Pasta – Friday, July 21 from 2:00-3:30pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a colorful pasta class! You’ll learn how to make homemade pasta dough and make it bright and colorful using natural food colorings. The end result will be beautiful rainbow noodles! Recipe is nut free but will contain gluten and eggs. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Teen Advisory Board – Tuesday, July 25 from 6:00-7:00pm in the Tutor Corner. Teen Advisory Board meets the last Tuesday of the month for current TAB members. Find out more about TAB and apply at southburylibrary.org/TAB. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Application for membership is required.

DIY Terrariums – Thursday, July 27 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Make your own terrarium! We’ll have all the supplies you need to make a closed moss terrarium for your room (or wherever you like!) These mini-mossariums are cute and easy to care for! You'll leave with your terrarium and care instructions. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Mad Science Monday: Bridges – Monday, July 31 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime Room. Join us for another Mad Science Monday! We’ll explore physics and engineering by building and testing a variety of bridges. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration is required.
