8/15/2023 - Children’s and Teen Programs for September 2023

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for September 2023 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, September 9, 16, 23, 30. Stop by the Youth Services department on Saturdays this month to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

Journal Decorating Craft – Saturday, September 9 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Storytime Room. Start the school year off by designing your own journal cover! Use one of ours or bring your favorite notebook to decorate. Miss Katie will also share a book for back to school inspiration while we craft. Grades 1-5. Registration required.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, September 11, 18, 25 from 10:00-10:30am and 11:00-11:30am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday except Labor Day. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, September 14th from 11:00am-12:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! Come and explore new flavors and textures while playing games all about food and MyPlate! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters. Ages 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Storytime at the Farmers’ Market – Thursday, September 14th and 28th from 3:30-5:30pm at the Southbury Town Hall Green. Stop by the Southbury Farmers' Market and visit the librarians, browse books and listen to stories. All ages. No registration required.

Saturday Family Storytime – Saturday, September 16 from 11:00-11:30 in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jen for a special family storytime! We will share some stories and songs together. Parents and older siblings are encouraged to join in for this family event. All ages. No registration required.

Food Explorers: Pumpkin Lasagna – Tuesday, September 19 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a delicious fall dessert program! You’ll be making Pumpkin Lasagna by layering graham cracker crumbles, pumpkin pudding and homemade whipped cream. This recipe is nut free but will contain dairy and gluten. Ages 6 & up. Registration required. ARTuesday For Ages 7 & Up – Tuesday, September 19 from 5:00-6:00pm in the Storytime room. Stop by for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Lego to the Library! – Wednesday, September 20 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime Room. Join us for an afternoon of LEGO fun! We’ll provide the LEGO bricks, and you bring the creativity! You can free build, or work off of instructions. Ages 5-10. Space is limited. Registration required.

Family Trivia Night – Friday, September 22 from 6:30-8pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us for another Family Trivia night! Work together as a family team to answer our trivia questions! We'll have a variety of topics, including kid-centric knowledge, general information, and questions aimed at parents, too. The family who answers the most questions correctly will win a $100 gift card to Riverview Cinemas! All ages. Registration required; space limited.

Food Explorers Baking (Two Hour Program) – Tuesday, September 26 from 4:00-6:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a two hour baking workshop! You’ll be making Mini Maple Pear Donuts and Puff Pastry Apple Rings. These recipes are nut free but will contain dairy, eggs and gluten. Ages 6 & up. Registration required.

ARTuesday For Ages 3-6 – Tuesday, September 26 from 5:00-6:00pm in the Storytime room. Stop by for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 3-6. Drop-In; No registration required.

Build Your Own Sticker Book: Latino Americans – Thursday, September 28th from 4:00-5:00pm in the Brown Room. Come experience this interactive "test-your-knowledge" program, fun for all ages, where you'll learn as you "Build Your Own History Book". The Latino Americans Sticker Book is a way to celebrate diversity by taking a meaningful dive into Latino and Hispanic heritage and learning about real difference-makers, like Cesar Chavez, Antonia Novello, Roberto Clemente, Sandra Cisneros and Lin-Manuel Miranda among many others. This is a wonderful program to enjoy as a family. Recommended for ages 6-12 and their families. Registration required.

Transgender & Gender Diverse Teen Panel – Tuesday, September 19 from 6:30–8:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Jillian Celentano and a panel of transgender and gender-diverse teens who will discuss what it’s like to be a transgender/gender-diverse teen in 2023. Hear personal stories about their gender journeys: the good, the bad, and how these teens are navigating through these challenging times. Learn about trans health care, the importance of an emotional support system, and what being an ally actually means. Grades 6-12 and adults. Registration requested.

Mad Science Monday: Batteries – Monday, September 25 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime Room. Get charged up and explore the science of batteries! We'll build batteries out of pennies, lemons, and more, and learn about how chemical reactions can create electricity. Grades 6-12. Registration required.

Marshmallow Madness – Thursday, September 28 from 6:00-7:00pm in the Storytime Room. STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and... Marshmallows? Join us for confectionary construction as we build marshmallow structures and a marshmallow catapult. Then, use your catapult to try to knock down your competitors' structures! Please note: marshmallows contain gelatin. Grades 6-12. Registration required.
