9/19/2023 - Children’s and Teen Programs for October 2023

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for October 2023 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, October 2, 16, 23, 30 from 10:00-10:30am and 11:00-11:30am in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday (Library is closed on October 9). All ages welcome. No registration required.

Babies & Books – Tuesday, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 from 10:30-11:00am in the Storytime Room. Babies & Books is a 6-week lapsit program for children 6 to 24 months and their parents/caregivers. Listen to short stories and songs. Registration required; space limited.

Tiny Food Explorers – Tuesday, October 3 from 11:00am-12:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! Come and explore new flavors and textures while playing games all about food and MyPlate! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters. Ages 2-5. Registration required; space limited.

DIY Craft Lab – Tuesday, October 3 from 4:00-6:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Stop by anytime between 4-6pm to join Mr. Matt for an afternoon of creating! DIY Craft Lab features a mix of ten open creative crafting stations and awesome craft projects for kids and teens. Stop by to make something, or everything! Grades 2-8. Registration required.

Toddler Time – Wednesday, October 4, 11, 18, 25 from 10:30-11:00am in the Storytime Room. Toddler Time is for children ages 2 & 3 years and their parents/caregivers. Listen to stories and complete a small craft. Registration required; space limited.

Stories and More - Thursday, October 5, 12, 19, 26 from 10:30-11:00am in the Storytime Room. Stories & Crafts is for children ages 4 & 5 able to sit and pay attention independently. Listen to stories and complete a craft or activity. Registration required.

Fundamentals of Cubing Rubik’s Cube Practice – Thursday, October 5, 12, 19, & 26 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime room. As preparation for our Saturday, October 28 Interlibrary Rubik's Cube Competition, join us to learn some techniques and hints, challenge each other, and practice. Grades 1-12. Drop-In; No registration required.

Food Explorers: Pizza Quesadillas – Thursday, October 5 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a delicious after school snack! You’ve all had quesadillas…but have you ever had a pizza quesadilla!? Children will make their own pizza quesadillas and choose from a variety of filling ingredients. Recipe is nut free but may contain dairy and gluten. Ages 6 & up. Registration required; space limited.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, October 7, 14, 21, 28. Stop by the Youth Services department on Saturdays this month to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

ARTuesday For Ages 7 & Up – Tuesday, October 10 from 5:00-6:00pm in the Storytime room. Stop by for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Three Different Approaches to Meditation – Tuesday, October 17 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Children grades 2-5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to join Dr. Wendy Hurwitz for a workshop on meditation! Three types of meditation will be presented, and ways to augment their benefits. Alternatives to meditation will also be discussed. There will be opportunities for participants to try each method. This is a fragrance-free program. Grades 2-5. Registration required.

Lego to the Library! – Wednesday, October 18 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime Room. Join us for an afternoon of LEGO fun! We’ll provide the LEGO bricks, and you bring the creativity! You can free build, or work off of instructions. Ages 5-10. Registration required; space limited.

Family Trivia Night – Friday, October 20 from 6:30-8:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us for another Family Trivia night! Work together as a family team to answer our trivia questions! We'll have a variety of topics, including kid-centric knowledge, general information, and questions aimed at parents, too. The family who answers the most questions correctly will win a $100 gift card to Riverview Cinemas! All ages. Registration required; space limited.

Halloween Flower Arranging with the Southbury Garden Club – Saturday, October 21 from 11:30am-1:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the Southbury Garden Club to make Halloween-themed flower arrangements. Ages 7 & up. Registration required; space limited.

Let’s Draw Monsters! With Rick Stromoski – Monday, October 23 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Brown Room. Award-winning cartoonist Rick Stromoski will show you how to draw creatures, goblins, ghosts, and all things Halloween-y! Rick will have signed copies of his new middle-grade graphic novel, Take a Hike, for purchase after the program. Ages 7-12. Registration required.

Design Your Own Witch Craft – Saturday, October 28 from 2:00-3:00pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Katie to design your very own witch for Halloween! Grades 1-5. Registration required; space limited.

Interlibrary Rubik’s Cube Competition – Saturday, October 28 from 2:00-3:00pm at the Woodbury Public Library. We are very excited to be partnering with the Woodbury Public Library for our 4th Interlibrary Rubik’s Cube Competition. Do you have what it takes to compete in this Rubik's Cube Competition? The fastest time wins a special prize. Our events include a Team Blindfold Solve Open to Grades 1-12 and Fastest 3x3 Cube Solve for three separate age groups: Grades 1-4, Grades 5-8, and Grades 9-12. Registration required; space limited.

Halloween Goodie Bags!– Tuesday, October 31, all day in the Youth Services department. Stop by the Youth Services circulation desk to pick up a fun Halloween goodie bag! We would love to see your costumes, but they are not required. While supplies last.

Teen Programs:

How to Write an Admissions Essay That Gets Noticed – Tuesday, October 10 from 6:00-7:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Learn how to make your college admissions essay stand out with admissions essay coach Gary Santaniello! Topics include: telling a compelling personal story in your unique voice, choosing an essay topic, and marshaling your thoughts and words in clear, effective writing. Grades 9-12. Registration required.

Food Explorers: Vanilla Chai Cake Pops – Wednesday, October 11 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a delicious fall baking program! We’ll use our handy cake pop machine to quickly bake some Vanilla Chai Cake Pops. And the best part, you’ll get to make your own glaze and decorate them! Recipe is nut free but will contain gluten, dairy, and eggs. Grades 6-12. Registration required; space limited.

DIY Book Pumpkins – Tuesday, October 17 from 6:00-7:00pm in the Brown Room. Join us to upcycle an old book into a pumpkin! These gourd-geous crafts are surprisingly easy to make. All supplies provided. Grades 6-12. Registration required; space limited.

DIY Pom-Pom Bats – Thursday, October 26 from 6:00-7:00pm in the Storytime Room. Join staff member Katie to make Pom-Pom bats! More cute than spooky, these round, fuzzy creatures are easy and fun to make. All supplies provided. Grades 6-12. Registration required; space limited.

Mad Science Monday: Blood Typing – Monday, October 30 from 4:00-5:00pm in the Storytime Room.This month, explore the science behind how antibodies are used to test blood types! We'll use a synthetic kit to identify the "blood types'' of different samples and determine if any are compatible pairs for a blood transfusion. No real blood will be present in this program. Grades 6-12. Registration required; space limited.
