7/3/2024 - The Energy of Falling Water - Connecticut’s Early Mills on July 27, 2024

On Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 1:00 - 2:30pm in the Kingsley Room, join us to learn more about the history of water-powered mills in Connecticut.

Water-powered mills revolutionized Connecticut in 1650, bringing civilization to the state. Villages sprung up around sawmills and gristmills, and soon factories producing cloth, hats, buttons, clocks, cider, plaster, and paper emerged. By the mid-1800s, Connecticut's water-powered mills were serving a global market. Join us as we explore the history of water-powered mills in Connecticut.

John Cilio is a historian, storyteller, a member of the Organization of American Historians and the Association for the Study of Connecticut History. He thrives on researching the ghosts of our past, uncovering the underlying forces and historical trends that one single event rarely impacts. He believes that often the consequences of a historical incident were hidden from those that experienced it, yet looking back, one can sense the full impact of their moments in time.

Like all Southbury Public Library programs, this event is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of town of residency. Registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Charles H. and Ella Emery Rutledge Fund. Please visit the link below for more information and to register.
