
Fall Fest returns with a week of fun, free programs, contests, and two movie showings! All activities and events are free to attend for Southbury residents, though most activities require registration. Residents of other towns are welcome to join for a small fee. Register for all programs at the Parks and Rec office or online at https://southburyct.myrec.com. There is no admission fee or registration required for the Fall Fest Kick Off (except for scarecrow building program), Trick-or-Treat Parade, or Outdoor Movie Night - all are welcome! All weather related changes will be posted to MyRec.
Parks and Rec will be collecting non-perishable foods at each event. All goods will be donated to the Southbury Food Bank, a list of their critical needs can be found here.
OUTDOOR EVENTS
Fall Fest Kick Off: Saturday, October 10 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Enjoy free cider served by the Knights of Columbus, apple cider donuts donated by ShopRite, and apples donated by Hidden Gem Orchard. Shop some craft vendors before you meet and interact with some furry farm friends! Build your own scarecrow to submit to the Scarecrow Contest and to display during the Movie Night – registration is required. Clothes and accessories have been donated for this use by the Southbury Training School Thrift Shops. Participants who registered for Scarecrow Building by the original registration deadline will receive a sweet treat from Bruno's on October 10.
Still want to build a scarecrow? Walk-ins welcomed! Bruno's Food Truck will be on-site with food and beverages available for purchase by all attendees.
Movie Night: Thursday, October 15 from 5:00pm-9:00pm.
- Trick-or-Treat Costume Parade: Come dressed to Trick-or-Treat! Local businesses will give out treats to parade participants. The parade starts at 5:00pm SHARP.
- Dance Party: Families will bust a move with Zumba instructor Karen Miller after the parade until the movie starts.
- Outdoor Movie: Co-sponsored by the Southbury Public Library: Toy Story 5 (rated PG) will begin at sunset, approximately 6:30pm, with a run time of 1h 42m. Throughout the night, enjoy free popcorn and water served by Parks and Rec; families are encouraged to bring picnic dinners. Layered clothing and blankets are encouraged to ensure everyone’s comfort and warmth during the show.

Programs of pumpkin carving, scarecrow building, Little Brown Bat presentation by the Southbury Land Trust, fall guessing contest, and Take-and-Make craft are offered during the Fall Festival Week. Pumpkins have been donated by Shoprite of Southbury, and scarecrow clothes and accessories by the Southbury Training School Thrift Shops.
Sensory Friendly Indoor Movie Matinee: Friday, October 16 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Toy Story 5 (rated PG) will be shown in the Parks and Rec building starting at 1:00pm. Bean bags and gentle lighting will set the cozy quiet atmosphere. Space is limited, registration required. Program is free to all residencies
CONTESTS: Winners announced Thursday, October 15.
Pumpkin Contest: Carve it! Paint it! Bedazzle it! Prizes awarded to the best pumpkin by a family, adult, teen, and child.
Scarecrow Contest: Stuff it! Dress it! Style it! Prizes awarded to the best Scarecrow overall and first runner up.
Submissions created outside the sponsored program times can be brought to the Parks and Rec office during regular business hours until Wednesday, October 14, 4:00pm. (Except for Monday, October 12 as the office will be closed for the holiday). Winners of these contests will be decided by Southbury Arts and Culture Alliance members. Contest winners will be announced before the start of the movie on October 15.
Guess the Number Contest: Stop by Parks and Rec’s tent at the kick off event on Saturday, October 10 or our office now through the movie night on October 15 to make your guess of how many candies are in the jar! Winner gets the candy as well as Toy Story themed toys.
