July-August 2024 News

MESSAGE FROM P&R DIRECTOR

Thank you for the warm welcome to the Town of Southbury! It’s been great meeting the teams who do the behind the scenes hard work to keep our parks well maintained, our camps exciting, our pool sparkling, and our programs thriving. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a pool membership - I hope you have been enjoying the Town pool with our new scan cards. If you’d like to visit the pool for one day instead of a full summer membership, you can get a resident adult day pass for $12 and a kid’s resident pass for $8. This is our final Summer with our original pool before construction begins for our new pool in September.

Our July concert series begins next week and we hope to see you Monday nights on the Town Hall Green for live music from 6PM- 8PM. I’m also looking forward to our movie night on Monday August 5th, when we will be showing The Little Mermaid (Live Action) movie at 8PM. Save the date! This event is free for all!

With camp in full swing on weekdays and pavilion rentals at Ballantine most weekends, the Pavilion parking lot at Ballantine will be fuller than usual. Please keep in mind that this is a shared space for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a Happy 4th of July!

ART IN THE PARK

art in the park

Lots of art was made at Ballantine Park on that beautiful Saturday day! Kids and adults alike tried their hand at different arts & crafts projects and recreational activities. Southbury Parks and Recreation partnered with the Arts and Culture Subcommittee of the Southbury Economic Development Commission and Middlebury and Southbury Equity and Inclusion Council on this event. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND CEREMONY

memorial day parade

The weather caused our Family Day Picnic to be canceled, but we held a wonderful parade and ceremony honoring men and women who have died in military service since the Civil War began in 1861. More photos on website and Facebook.

July 1: 6:00-8:00pm “Jukebox 45“

Jukebox 45 is CT’s premier 50s and 60s show band. This group of talented musicians re-creates the most memorable tunes and great musical harmonies from the 50's and 60's, including famous songs from such artists as The Duprees, The Rays, Bill Haley & The Comets, The Monkeys, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Drifters, The Rascals, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, The 5 Satins, Danny & The Juniors, Dion & The Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, Jay & The Americans, and many more... Audiences won’t sit still once Jukebox 45 starts playing the hits.

July 8: 6:00-8:00pm “The Kathy Thompson Band”

The Kathy Thompson band is a fun party band led by lead vocal Kathy Thompson who is joined by a dynamic horn/background vocal section consisting of trumpet, flugelhorn, tenor & alto saxophones, flute, and baritone saxophone. The lead guitar, drums and electric bass add to the band’s big sound along with background vocals. Together, KTB, is an unstoppable force in any room, bringing an excitement that gets audiences out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Mixing old school funk, soul, and R’n’B hits along with a complementary sprinkling of selections from contemporary artists, KTB is able to command any audience, young or old, and send their spirits grooving.

July 15: 6:00-8:00pm “Cover2Cover”

Cover2Cover is celebrating their 16th year entertaining New England. C2C has been recognized as CT's premier dance party band playing all the best hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and more. C2C loves playing outdoors and provides family friendly top entertainment to get people of all ages moving.

July 22: 6:00-8:00pm “The O-Tones”

The O-Tones, a hot New England Swing & Motown band, appeals to all ages. With lots of soul, they’ll get your feet dancing. Their songs are well-loved, coming from many different eras. Whether singing an old jazz ballad or punching out a fiery Motown or R&B tune for dancing, audiences have taken to their sound for decades. Their diverse repertoire as a dance band showcases powerful vocal harmonies, a driving rhythm section, soulful tenor sax, blazing guitar solos, and funky keyboard. The older generation feels nostalgic while the younger crowd comes alive hearing the compelling rhythm and melodies. They really understand the groove.

July 29: 6:00-8:00 pm “The Rakes”

The Rakes are a band of 5 friends who have as much fun perfecting their songs as they do performing them; and it shows. Exceptional vocals are at the forefront with solid backing musicianship that compliments rather than distracts. Covering a diverse selection of genre jumping music a Rakes gig is a guaranteed good time. At their core, The Rakes are a countryish Americana band. But as you will quickly learn they defy the "country" label. Mixing classic rock, a little soul, a dash of blues, a "90's" music and even a little hip hop. The Rakes exhibit broad appeal as they truly play something for just about everyone.
