MESSAGE FROM P&R DIRECTOR
As August comes to an end and the leaves start to fall, I would like to thank everyone who visited our pool and sent their kids to camp with us this Summer. I really enjoyed watching our residents dance together at the concerts, seeing people tend to their garden plots at Settlers, and hearing the kids laugh and play together at Movie Night. I hope you found time to relax and made great memories with your kids while they were home.
Although we are recovering from a once in a lifetime flood, the silver lining has been witnessing how this community comes together in a time of tragedy. From delivering meals to affected homes, to planting new flowers in demolished yards, to food and clothing drives, and assisting with flood clean-up, our neighbors truly are amazing. And despite how overworked our Public Works crews are, they are still finding time to tend to our fields so the lines can be painted and grass can be mowed for our kid’s fall football, soccer, and lacrosse. The flood presented trying times for many, yet we still have so much to be grateful for.
Let’s come together to celebrate how resilient we are! Next Saturday September 7th is our annual celebration at the Southbury Training School, beginning at 4:30PM. We have over a dozen food vendors, a great line-up of live music, and of course our fireworks show at 8:15PM. We hope to see you there!

OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT

SOUTHBURY CELEBRATION – September 7, 2024, 4:30-9:00pm
Lake Stibbs Field, Southbury Training School, 1461 South Britain Road.
Food! Fun!! Fireworks!!! Please bring your lawn chairs and blankets and get set for a terrific evening of fun and celebration for all ages. FIREWORKS approximately at 8:15pm. Click here to view the list of food vendors and other details.
No alcohol and no pets are permitted at the event. Caution should be exercised with service animals due to the large crowds and fireworks noises. In case of inclement weather, please call the Southbury Parks & Recreation Department Info-line at 203-262-0633 for an official announcement.

INTRODUCTION TO ORIENTEERING – October 5, 2024, 2:00-3:30pm
Join the fun with Southbury Land Trust and Southbury Parks and Rec as we introduce you to the sport of Orienteering. Rick and Susan DeWitt with Western CT Orienteering Club will lead a 90-minute introduction to the sport of orienteering. We’ll teach people the basic skills required for the sport: how to read an orienteering map, how to use a compass to orient the map, and the rules for completing an orienteering course. SENSORY FRIENDLY TODDLER CLASS: FREE PLAY BASED DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING – September 17, 2024, 09:30-10:30am
This class, in collaboration with More to Day Pediatric Development & Therapy, is for children ages 18 months to 3 years. Bring your little ones to a sensory-friendly environment where they can explore different textures, participate in movement activities, make a fall-themed craft and socialize in a group setting! Free play-based developmental screenings will be available for speech, feeding, and occupational therapy by therapists from More to Say! Details and Registration.
GUESSING GAME: FALL LEAVES – until November 7, 2024
Come to the Parks & Recreation Office to guess the number of leaves in the jar. Fill out a slip of paper with your contact information and your guess of the total number of leaves in the jar. All ages are welcome to participate and there is no fee to guess. The winner will receive one free clubhouse program, a certificate, and an option for a photo to be taken and posted on the Town of Southbury's social media, and bragging rights! Details.
PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST – until November 4, 2024
Have some fun and paint or carve your funniest, scariest, or most creative pumpkin. Take a picture of your pumpkin and submit it to the Town of Southbury's online form or drop it off at the Parks & Recreation Office on or before November 4, 2024. Click for details.
SCARECROW CONTEST – until November 4, 2024
When the leaves start to fall, be creative and make your scarecrow! Submit a picture of your scarecrow to the Town of Southbury's online form or drop off a picture at the Southbury Parks and Recreation office on or before November 4, 2024. Click for details.
FASHION DESIGN WITH VAC ENRICHMENT
Step into the world of style and creativity with our 3rd-5th Grade Fashion Class! If your child has a flair for fashion or a passion for design, this afterschool enrichment program is tailor-made for them. In this class, young fashionistas will embark on a journey of self-expression through the exciting world of fashion. In this class, the students will be predominantly drawing designs. Students must bring a Chromebook or laptop, (an iPad will do too)!
FULL MOON YOGA BY ONE LOVE WELLNESS
Connect with nature, unwind, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul in this outdoor setting. Bring your mat or towel, water bottle, and positive vibes for a night of relaxation with your community. Don't miss out on this unique experience to practice yoga under the full blue moon's energy! Whether you are a seasoned yogi, or just starting out, all levels are welcome!
MOMMY AND ME YOGA
This program focuses on movement and meditation to help mothers honor their body changes, connect with themselves and strengthen bonds with their babies. Mommy and Me aims to promote relaxation, restoration, and nurturing while fostering creativity, fun, and joy in the journey of motherhood!

PARKS & REC CLUBHOUSE - Ball Python & Snakes Lab
This lab offers a fun way of learning about certain snakes as pets and in the wild, including all the different snakes in Connecticut. Each lab offers something different and each class ends with hands on experience with pet ball pythons (they are non-venomous). We highly encourage all ages to attend: children, teens, adults and seniors!

ZUMBA
Join us for a fun and fabulous hour of cardio and calorie burning! Instructor Karen Miller has been a certified Zumba teacher for 11 years and would love for you to enjoy what she has loved for all these years! No previous dance experience is necessary! We will learn together. You will not even realize you are working out! Wear comfortable work-out clothes and sneakers and bring plenty of water.
