Town Public Information Session: Proposed Solar Project at the Transfer Station
The Town will host a public information session on Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 pm in Room 205 at Southbury Town Hall to share details about a proposed solar project at the Town’s Transfer Station and to provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback before the project moves to formal review by the Planning Commission.
This session is part of the Town’s commitment to early community engagement and transparency as the project moves through the planning process.
About the Proposed Project
The Town is exploring the installation of a solar array on a portion of the Transfer Station property. The goal is to make productive use of land that currently generates costs for the Town while also providing revenue to the town.
Key points about the proposal:
- No taxpayer funds would be used to build the solar project.
- The project would be privately developed and financed.
- The Town would receive approximately $35,000 per year in land-use lease payments for an estimated 20–35 years, depending on the lifespan of the solar panels.
- Town officials are coordinating with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to ensure the design protects the capped landfill at the site.
What to Expect at the Session
The outreach event will include two parts:
Open House (45–60 minutes)
Residents can walk around the room, review informational displays, and speak directly with Town officials and project representatives.
Displays will include:
- Project site plan
- Visual renderings (before and after)
- Stormwater management approach
- Decommissioning plan
- Financial overview and benefits to the Town
- Construction timeline
Presentation and Q&A (20–30 minutes)
A brief presentation will cover:
- Why the Town is pursuing this project
- The site selection process
- Environmental considerations
- Economic and financial benefits
A moderated question-and-answer session will follow. Questions and feedback from the public will be documented and shared with the Planning Commission as part of the project review process.
The Town is working with Verogy, a Connecticut-based solar company with extensive experience developing similar solar projects, whose representative will participate in the presentation along with Town officials.
After the Meeting
Following the outreach session, the Town will:
- Post presentation materials online
- Publish a FAQ addressing questions raised by residents
- Share a summary of community feedback
- Note any project changes
The Town encourages residents to attend, learn more about the proposal, and participate in the conversation.
Updates about the event will be posted on the Town website and shared through social media, the Town email list, and local media outlets.
