Storm Updates

8/23/2024 - Flooding Update and Closed Roads - August 23, 2024

From the Office of the Southbury First Selectman:

The Town of Southbury continues to recover from the severe flooding event. We thank all residents for their cooperation and patience during this time. The Town of Southbury remains committed to ensuring the safety and recovery of our community.

Please visit our website at www.southbury-ct.org/emergencycenter for the most up-to-date information.

1. Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Network Offers Help with Flood Cleanup

The Town of Southbury is working with Southern Baptist Church Disaster Relief (SBCD) to head our disaster recovery efforts for private residents. SBCD started operating in Southbury to assess damages and bring crews in to provide residents with flood recovery and mold mitigation efforts. This organization played a critical role in our tornado recovery effort in 2018. SBCD will help homeowners with free cleanup services such as:

  • Removal of residual mud and water
  • Carry-out of unsalvageable damaged property
  • Tear-out of damaged building materials: carpeting, pads, sheetrock, sub-flooring, etc.
  • Power-washing of damaged soiled areas
  • Sanitation

For those homeowners seeking assistance, please call 203-494-2675 to contact Southern Baptist Church Disaster Relief.

2. Infrastructure Repairs and School Reopening: First Selectman Jeff Manville reassures all Southbury residents: The town is working around the clock to ensure that roads, public facilities, and essential services are restored promptly. Region 15 is hard at work to ensure that the schools will open as scheduled and the children can be safely transported.

3. Eversource: Currently, we are showing zero power outages in Southbury. If you experience a power outage, please call Eversource at 1-800-286-2000 to report your outage.

4. Transfer Station Fee Waivers for Storm Debris: In order to aid our citizens in the cleanup from the devastating flooding, the town of Southbury is waiving fees for storm-related debris brought to the town’s Transfer Station. Homeowners can bring their vegetative debris and household items that were damaged in the flooding at no charge.

Please identify the address where the debris originated. We do understand neighbors are helping each other and we appreciate that. Identifying the location will help us with our potential reimbursement from FEMA.

Logs, stumps, and hazardous material will NOT be accepted. Please do not mix these items in with your loads.

In order to use the Southbury Transfer Station you must have a permit. Permits can be obtained at the Transfer Station or at the First Selectman's office at Southbury Town Hall. You need to provide your picture ID and vehicle registration in order to obtain a permit if you do not already have one.

Southbury Transfer Station is located at 231 Kettletown Road. It is open Tuesday - Saturday, from 7:00am to 3:00pm.

5. Health Department: The Housatonic Valley Health District will be present at the Arts and Eats event at town hall tomorrow as well as the Farmers Market next Thursday, to offer health services and information to residents. This is a great opportunity to get health-related questions answered and to learn more about maintaining well-being in the aftermath of the storm. Stop by their tent to ask about testing your well.

6. Potable Water: Connecticut Water has a potable water tanker available in the lower parking lot of the Town Hall for any residents in need. Please remember to bring your own container for water collection.

7. Roadways: Please be mindful of the speed limits on the detour roads. The following is a list of roads that remain closed.
