Storm Updates

8/24/2024 - Flooding Update and Closed Roads - August 24, 2024

From the Office of the Southbury First Selectman:

The Southbury Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains open and continues to meet daily to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents as our community recovers from the recent flood. This morning, town officials, department heads, and school officials convened to discuss critical topics, including current road conditions, public safety matters, and preparations for the upcoming school year.

Significant progress has been made over the past six days, thanks to the committed and tireless efforts of our town staff, emergency responders, community partners, volunteers, and residents. Roads are being repaired, and essential services are steadily being restored. We understand the importance of getting our schools ready for the new academic year, and plans are well underway to ensure a safe and timely opening.

Thank you to Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, FEMA officials, and the Red Cross who met with First Selectman Manville, Southbury Emergency Director Stephen Schnell, and Fire Marshal Derrek Guertin yesterday. Because of the swift action of our Emergency Operations Team and starting damage assessment reporting on day one, Southbury is well prepared for the FEMA Assessment Teams that will be on the ground in Southbury sometime next week. FEMA’s assessment will go much more quickly and smoothly because of the comprehensive information our town Emergency Operation Center (EOC) directors have collected internally and from the public thus far. Thank you to those who self-reported their damages. If you have not reported your damages, please do so as soon as possible at this site. A FEMA Center will be set up once FEMA is done with their assessments. More information to come as things progress.

The EOC will continue to operate, coordinating efforts across all sectors to address ongoing needs and keep the public informed. We encourage residents to continue supporting one another as we work towards full recovery.

An extra stop sign is being placed at the intersection of Community House Rd and Pepper Tree to slow traffic there.

As a reminder, the Southbury Transfer Station is waiving fees for permitted residents disposing of storm debris. To take advantage of this service, residents must present their driver’s license at the time of drop-off. This fee waiver applies to storm debris only.

Potable water is still available at Town Hall. Connecticut Water has stationed a potable water tanker in the lower parking lot for any residents in need. Please bring your own container to collect the water.

For further updates and information, please continue to monitor the Town's Emergency Management page: www.southbury-ct.org/emergencycenter.
