Storm Updates

8/22/2024 - Flooding Update and Closed Roads - August 22, 2024

From the Office of the Southbury First Selectman:

The Town of Southbury is actively working to support residents as the community recovers from the recent storm. Below are key updates and resources available to all residents.

1. Insurance Information for Flood and Storm Damage: The State of Connecticut Insurance Department is offering valuable information to help consumers navigate flood and storm damage insurance claims. Residents are encouraged to visit the department’s website for detailed guidance on how to protect their property and understand their insurance options. For more information, please visit the State of Connecticut Insurance Department. portal.ct.gov/cid/consumer-resource-library/consumer-alerts/2024-consumer-alerts/alert-2024-08-19

2. FEMA Disaster Declaration Guidelines: For residents seeking information on the process for declaring a disaster and accessing federal assistance, FEMA has provided clear guidelines. These guidelines can be found on our website, www.southbury-ct.org/emergencycenter . Please visit FEMA Disaster Declaration Guidelines for more details.

3. Infrastructure Repairs and School Reopening: First Selectman Jeff Manville reassures all Southbury residents: "We are doing everything we can to get infrastructure repaired and schools opened on schedule." The town is working around the clock to ensure that roads, public facilities, and essential services are restored promptly. Eversource Media Relations recently released the following statement, "We're grateful to have such a strong partner in the town of Southbury as we’ve continued to work closely with the community to support recovery and restoration efforts," said Vice President of Connecticut Electric Operations Don Scacco. "Despite the tough conditions, our crews have been working nonstop to repair and rebuild portions of our electric system swept away by strong currents. In some areas, we're still unable to access our equipment because of the devastating damage left behind by the severe storms and historic flooding, and I'm proud of our crews for innovating creative solutions—including setting up temporary poles and wires through heavily wooded areas to deliver the power our customers need to focus on cleaning up and rebuilding." Currently, we are showing zero power outages in Southbury. If you experience a power outage, please call Eversource at 1-800-286-2000 to report your outage.

4. Transfer Station Fee Waivers for Storm Debris: In an effort to assist with cleanup efforts, the Southbury Transfer Station is waiving fees for permitted residents disposing of storm debris. To take advantage of this service, residents must present their driver’s license at the time of drop-off. This fee waiver applies to storm debris only.

5. Health Department at the Farmers Market: Today, the Southbury Health Department will be present at our Farmers Market to offer health services and information to residents. This is a great opportunity to get health-related questions answered and to learn more about maintaining well-being in the aftermath of the storm. Stop by their tent to ask about testing your well.

6. Potable Water: Connecticut Water has a potable water tanker available in the lower parking lot of the Town Hall for any residents in need. Please remember to bring your own container for water collection.

7. Roadways: CT DOT has opened Main Street North (Rte. 6) near Mansion House Road to a single lane of alternating traffic.

We thank all residents for their cooperation and resilience during this time. The Town of Southbury remains committed to ensuring the safety and recovery of our community.
